MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 clutch on 948cc MkII Sprite engine

I have heard of an ingenious MkII Sprite owner who has modified a 948cc MkII Sprite engine (9CG) to take a 1275cc diaphragm clutch cover and disc. Apparently this was by modifying the flywheel and then using an appropriate sized clutch slave cylinder. This was done due to the lack of local availability of 9 spring clutches (think they wanted an upgrade for a rally/fast road engine so not wanted to use the original 6 spring clutch?) in Australia.

I have suggested he join and post on here as this is just the stuff we love to talk about and more importantly there are some very practical people on here who do very interesting mods including using/adapting standard parts.

There is a video on the MkII Sprites and MkI midgets Facebook Group page showing and talking through this modification but the poster Pirat Pete does not want it shared outside that group unfortunately but I can understand why.

Clutch and gearbox gurus - what say you?

That's what I have in my 1420cc A series engine. 1380 bores + 1098 crank + 948 flywheel with a 1275 clutch cover. IIRC the pattern for the screws is the same but the flywheel needs to be drilled to take 2 more dowels as the 948 cover uses 2 dowels and the 1275 cover 3.

Exactly what I have on my 998 Frogeye. I tried 9-spring clutches but the pedal pressure was awful. Standard flywheel, new holes drilled on a lathe to keep them concentric. Standard 1275 clutch cover and disc, and 1275 slave. Original master cylinder sleeved down to 3/4" with brass tube, sealed in with high quality silicone. The most difficult job was drilling the ports without leaving burrs. I also have a roller release bearing in a carrier I made.

I didn't think all this was particularly ingenious!

I did the same with my A35.

I tried a 1098 flywheel and clutch, but it wasn't up to the job, so I had the original 948 flywheel re-drilled and lightened.

Only three of the original screw holes are used, so three more have to be drilled and tapped, as well as three new dowel holes.

When I built the replacement engine, I had a new flywheel made.
