MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 Oil Cooler installation

Can anyone show me a picture of a 1275 with an oil cooler system with Thermostat. I want to fit a system to my midget, but can,t see how the thermostat will mount alongside the heater ducting, and all the other things in the way. I need the cooler for motorways in summer, as the temp. gets above 100 oC.
There is no problem mounting the cooler itself, or feeding the pipes through the bulkhead, its just the thermostat mounting and pipework in the bay.
Thanks in advance.

Just put some tin foil over the oil cooler in the winter.

...and closer.
Works with the heater trunking in place, although my replacement still awaits installation. Use the strongest pipe clips you can buy (got mine from a hydraulic hose specialist)

Dave - can't get a piccy at the moment but mine's just like Steve's but I don't have the bracket. Just means I've routed the pipe to the back of the block along the outside of the heater trunking, then underneath it at the back. I managed to cut the pipe to just the right length to stop it chaffing on anything.

sreve,

is that the oil thermostat ...that barrel thing in the photo

Prop - the barrel thing with 4 pipes connected.

I made a lovely aluminium bracket for mine.....only to find I couldn't get the heater pipe in ! So it did all last year tied to the heater pipe with garden wire.!

one of the jobs to sort :-)

Bloody expencive this oil cooler lark. Ive bought the rad and Ive got the instalation kit from moss, Didnt realise I had to buy the thermostat seperate so thats next on the list!

just been looking at moss's website.

I’ve bought the braided hose kit so I know i need a screw on type thermostat

but could someone explain what the others they list are.

there’s one under restoration parts at £23, 2 in, 2 out pipes.

then under performance they have two mocal stat's. The 2 in, 2 out with threaded ends for the braided pipe which is what I guess ill have to get.

But they also do a "standard" one for push on rubber pipes, but this one had 1-in and 1-out.

Hi Dave

I didn't use an oil cooler with my tuned Aseries - this would run up to ~110C (sump oil temp) on motorways, with oil pressure dropping to 60 psi. This temp isn't a problem with modern oils.

On track days, sometimes saw 120C.

These see around 90C on main roads, and 95 to 106C under similar conditons with the K (measured in the oil line before the filter), and up around 115C on track days.

From memory you want to have an oil temp of about 100-107C so that any water boils off and to assist the oil in working properly.

Fantastic quick service guys, is the general opinion then that I don,t need a cooler. temperature only goes above 100oC on motorways in hot weather. temperature sender is in the sump, oil is castrol classic 20/50.

There is a drop in power once you see oil temps much above 90.
