MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1968 Midget parts advice

Hi all what an interesting site. I need some advice, my wifes 1968 midget has failed the mot on a few minor probs and one large one being front suspension, my mechanic is happy to do the work but has asked me to source the parts especially the wishbones/kingpins. Has anybody purchased or fitted these recently and can they recomend any?

Thanks

You could try Moss in Stockport, although their prices look kind of scary.

You are probably best buying a recon stub-axle assembly which includes a new kingpin, rather than a kingpin and bush kit, unles your mechanic has the correct stepped reamer for a Midget.

Just had a look on fleabay. MG Centre Wrexham have wishbones and stub axles on there...

BTW...You "DO NOT"... need new inner tie rods, This is vary common with modern day car shops that dont know how these old british racks is set up....I uses a ball and cup method, unlike modern day suspenion that have a non-serviceable sealed ball-joint...so if the inner tie rods are a little loose, it simply means it needs a little shimming of the cap, or filing off the female cup...once its apart, it will make perfect scence what Im saying

If you do get a recon. rack...HAVE it dis-assembled and looked over before its installed, there have been alot of reports that these recon racks are as bad as the one you are replacing

Also remember that your rack does NOT use grease, it uses oil.

sorry...

"I uses a ball and cup method,"

Should read "It uses a ball, cup and cap method"

Now that is a great price on fleabay,

If mark 123 dosnt take the pans I might see if the guy will ship to the usa

Where did he say he needed inner tie rods Prop??

Go directly to Barry King for your wishbones. Most suppliers will sell you them but at a premium. Buy directly from Barry at a better price.

As for King Pins and Bushes etc, as suggested above.

Good luck....

hey robert,

He didnt, But the odds are outstanding that a mondern day shop is going to tell mark123 that he needs them. So its just a little heads up warning.

Hey... M T Boldry,

Will those pans from barry king, work okay with the frontline kit, and the other parts, or will I need to resort to the power of Thors Hammer to persaude the parts to fit with each other?

Prop.

I don't use anything from Frontline.

However, for those who choose to, I am led to believe they will fit the Barry King suspension pans with no problems at all.

M Knight doesn't say there is anything wrong with the steering, so there should be no need to disturb anything there.

Even when an MOT station has failed on "Front Suspension" they are unlikely to have attempted to actually diagnose the problem accurately enough to determine what needs replacing. Maybe the mechanic has done so properly, and wishbone pans and kingpins are needed. But it is well worth spending a half hour or so checking properly before starting any dismantling or ordering parts.

Poor shock absorbers could well just mean that they need topping up, or even that the three mounting bolts have loosened up a bit.
Slack in the bottom fulcrum pin can sometimes be sorted with a good dose of grease.
Slack in the kingpins may be repaired by adjustment, or removal of shims.

It needs some thorough checking first - don't just rely on the MOT assessment.

Agree with Guy. Has your mechanic had a proper look? His asking you to get the parts raises the question - is he familiar with Spridget front suspension?
Nick

Nick,

Theres theres the hole in the bottom of the bucket, you nailed it.

It does lead to speculation if the mechanic has done vary much old british suspen or is he just free wheeling it, which I suspect because he wants mark to get the parts, not completely un-common as Im sure the mech. dosnt want to waste time tracking down parts for old cars from non-existant companys
