MG Midget and Sprite Technical - '79 steering wheel removal
I'll be danged if my key didn't snap off in the ignition :( I removed the 1" nut from the steering wheel but it still won't come off. Am I missing something or do I need to get out the rubber mallot? To top it all off the next day my computer crashed so I have to go to the childrens houses if I want to check anything online so things aren't as quick as I'd like. TIA Mike T |

Mike' You do not have to remove the steering wheel to change the lock.. Just remove the three bolts holding the column up and let it lower. On an MGB they are 9/16". Then you can remove the two shrouds. Then with a small cape chisel tap the two headless scres off.A good center point will also work, Or if you have a dremel or like grinder make a slot for a screwdriver./ Most locksmiths can repair that ign lock at that point. I have done it this way since I started business in 1979. Sandy |

Careful hitting the collapsible column. Mine is a 78, I've heard that if you drive around a few days with the nut removed it might come loose. Doesn't sound like an option with the key problem. I was replacing my wheel & didn't want the old one any more so I drilled holes in it and used a puller. (Even with the holes in it someone wanted it so I gave it away!) |

Maybe this Youtube-movie might be of ay help: http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=lwf2BDC5DMo (John Twist explains how to remove the steering wheel on MGBs and midgets) |
