MG Midget and Sprite Technical - A couple of quickies

Hi all, couple of quick questions.

As previously mentioned, after rebuilding the coolant system I found the thread for the thermostat housing to pump housing bolt holes completely bare.

have picked up a second hand unit and while cleaning it up have found that the flange which the stat sits in is pitted. Will this be a problem? May need to find an alternative housing anyway, the threads on this one seems equally bare (curses!)

Secondly, I'm trying to figure how one connects the rear number plate to a chrome bumper midget. I have the plate backing and the rubber buffers but I'm not sure how the plate backing is connected to the rear of the car.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

James, from your picture I see nothing unusual. The flange will clean with a scraper and the threads look intact for the thermostat housing, just put new studs in them. The thermostat does not need to seal on its seat, it just locates there.

Thanks Mark,

Very helpful. going to test the threads before I continue cleaning JUST IN CASE!

Cleaned using a method mentioned on here ages ago, the anode/cathode suspended in soda crystals. Worked a treat!

anyone got any info on how the rear number plate attaches to the car body? 1965 style?
James Ballard

Duck tape and bailing wire, works for me....But not recommended, LOL

sorry.

Is it the one piece fat bumper or the split thin bumpers

The one piece fat one (we fatso's prefer to say pleasantly plump!), I have the backing plate, rubber jobbies, washers, etc but have kno idea how they are supposed to come together and hold the number plate on!

James
The number backing plate should attach to the body below the boot opening above rear bumper. Should be 2 holes drilled thru the valance. Rubber things between the body and the plate, bolts from outside and nuts/washers inside/ you may be able to hook your licence lamp ground to one of those bolts?
Hopw that's the way it goes????

Cant help you with the "LARD BUTT BUMPER" ...LOL, as mine is the later Anorexic Split style bumper.

But it sure sounds like Mike Above know what he is talking about.

Good luck with that Hoss bumper

Thanks Mike,

Thought it'd go that way, just didn't want to find out I was wrong too late to do anything about it!

Thanks all.
