MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Alternator failure??????

1275 midget with alternator.
Have noticed that when indicating right it takes time to start flashing so changed flasher unit now at speed when indicating right nothing happens and the elec tacho drops to zero - no other problems.
At idle all is fine.
This weekend the alternator appears to have failed - battery draining over 50 miles +. Volts across batt 12.4 at all revs. Red indicator light not on once engine running.
Any ideas?

Yes I've checked the condensor.....LOL

Cool,

Ive got almost the same problem on my truck starting this last week, even replaced the alt. drive for 10 minutes and that alt light comes on and off randomly, starts with a small glow and gets brighter, seems like it flickers on and off more so on bumpy roads, at idle its fine...my guess is bad ground also...cant wait to get thur this job to find out whats going wrong.

< At idle all is fine >

Do you mean the right-hand indicator functions normally at idle?

< Volts across batt 12.4 at all revs >

What is the voltage with engine off/key off?

Perhaps your alternator is failing, but not yet failed. It has weak amperage at 12.4V that cannot supply ancillaries sufficient output at high revs. Battery will show something like 11.7V with system off. Just a guess.

I took a fast look today, and the ground wire was frayed badly and missing about 6 inches of insulation, and covered in gunk, so i gave it a good wash with some brake cleaner...helped a little, hopefully tomarrow I can cut back the ground wire and solder on a new clip and clean up the ground connection....and hopefully that will work....My guess and hope, that is where the problem resides, other wise its pull the alt (Agian) and try another 1, not sure where else to look or try if that dosnt fix it....(built in reg. on the alt.)

So far its still able to charge the battry, I just let it idle for around 20 inutes when I get home at night, the battry still showing full charge, according to Autozone.

Prop...32 guages in my shop, and not a single volt gauge...LOL...Prop

Hmmmm
The red light comes on when you turn the ignition on, goes out when car running but does not come back on when engine turned off - have to wait a while then put ignition back on an light comes on.
Volts across battery when stopped about 12.4V.
