MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Boot lock barrel replacement

Hi

Anyone replaced a barrel in a Spridget boot lock please? Reason for asking is that I have found a correct early MkII Sprite boot handle but the lock does not work.

Thanks

It's one of these lock and handles (ALH2573): https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/handle-assembly-boot-lid-with-2-keys-alh2573.html?assoc=404162 - I am amazed you can buy these new as were not fitted to many MkII Sprites or MkI midgets (wonder if on another vehicle?).

That’s interesting. Leacy list it as being for a Frogeye :o)

That's interesting that Leacy list it too, albeit not in stock as well as incorrect application given. According to Horler, was only on March to Oct 1961 MkII Sprites (and June to Oct 1961 MkI Midgets).

I think the part was from the British Austin made Nash Metroplitan (rear boot/trunk lock ALH2573 listed on the website of Kip Motors of Dallas, Texas - they stock some unusual stuff including parts for Berkeley microcars as well as reproduction WWI rotary aero engines!)

I think it may be as I bought a replacement barrel many moons ago but in the end bought a complete replacement as the original's chrome was poor.
I've also filed the fingers in the barrel to fit a key rather than have multiple keys, for an old VW.
Here's a YouTube link for interest.

I've swapped over lock barrels a couple of times. The first time was from the T handle to the earlier L handle. The second time was from the first L handle I had to it's replacement which I drilled before having re-chromed. There are slight differences between the L handles I have so I'm guessing one of them isn't correct or the factory used slightly different handles during production.

It's not a difficult job to do and I vaguely recall a bit of filing and maybe tapping out a roll pin.
