MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Brake upgrade

Does anyone know how easy it is to convert a midget to MGB discs and calipers? I assume they don't just bolt straight on? Has anyone on this BBS done it?
Glyn '72 midget

Hi Glyn
I am in the process of converting my 72 Midbet to 9" discs. As I understand it the MGB calipers bolt on directly. The discs are 9" spitfire discs and a spacer has to be machined to fit the discs to the hubs. Then there is a problem with the steering arms hitting the discs so you either space the arm away or fit smaller trackrod ends(rose joints). I will let you know how I get on. I would be interested if anyone has a pattern to cross drill the discs to aid the cooling.

Go back to the midget genral section and look for a thread called "Drilling the steering arm" By Brad

Brad has been doing this modification for sometime, and can probably give you some heads up info.

David, there has been a lot of controversy about cross drilling rotors and from my experience I'd say don't do it. I drilled mine when I installed them back in 99 and didn't have any problems, but I don't drive the car many miles each year, probably under a thousand miles per year usually. I removed them this year to install new pads and for a general cleanup and found small cracks beginning to form at several of the holes. This is what had been mentioned by others, seems the heating and cooling cycles induce stresses that can't be equalized and cracks develope. Of course with a brake disc the possibility of failure is not something we want to happen, so I'd say don't drill. So far slotting and dimpling have been proved to be ok as far as I know and you can buy discs with these from sources such as Moss at a reasonable price if you want that improvement in cooling and gas removal. I'll be installing Brembo slotted discs along with green stuff pads this time around.
