MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Broken Speedo Drive ?
Gang I have got round to fixing what I thought was a broken speedo cable and it turned out to be the small stubby square cable on the angle drive that slides into the speedo drive gear on the type-9 box. Luckily it did not damage the ford drive gear. My question is, is the angle drive a ford peice of kit or do I have to by a new one from speedy cables where I sourced this one. For the record my drive gear is the creamy white colour one and with my 1500 diff and 175/70/13 tyres it is pretty well bang on for speedo readings. Lee

Lee AFAIK the angle drive isnt a Ford part It'll be a Speedy Cables bit was it expensive can you not repair the busted bit if it is the "squared off cable bit" cant you make another I just modified the BMC bit that the Spridget speedo cable screws on to, to fit in the Ford gearbox recess, using an electric drill as a lathe Slimmed down the cutoff threaded bit (Discard the threaded end) and turned down the diameter to fit in the recess for the circlip face and Bob's a relative. I think it cost me about 20 pence for a circlip to retain the end in place Opened the hole in the plastic drive gear to fit the thicker square cable in the midget speedo cable job done* *But I did have to open a hole inside the tunnel to take the cable across the floor behind the cross member

Ta Bill I bet the hole I drilled in the tunnel to get to the core plug and remove the drive gear is bigger, I tried and tried to remove from underneath but could not do it. might be something for others to think about when doing a new install.

I found a simple "non-structural" way of filling these holes (yes I have one on that side too, guess why?) is the make a steel plate the size and shape I needed and stick it on with silicone sealer. makes a good seal but is easy to get off if/as/when you need further access. That angle drive, I understand John Collins has used a similar doohdah from Jaguar, same thread size as the end of the Spridget cable I think. The picture shows the cable's hole with the black snake working its way across the floor. directly below the gearlever is the hole punch my mate loaned to me to punch out the access hole, wonderful tool ![]()
