MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Chassis numbers

Where do I find my chassis number, all I can find is the body number ABL 064750. I'm worried because it is listed as a Sprite on the V5, but it's got round wheel arches, and I thought this might be wrong, Any advice will be most welcome.

According to Moss the chassis number should be on the inner wing on the inlet/exhaust side of the engine bay, I say should as mine has been moved to the front slam panel by the bonnet catch.

Neil,

Mine's a 1973 ex USA RWA car and the VIN plate is rivetted to the B Post of the passenger side. As Mark says it is normally on the support step on the left hand inner wheel arch under the bonnet on UK cars.

Thanks guys, but I've checked there, and it must have been removed long ago. The B post has go the body number only, and I don't know how you could cross refer that. Is there anywhere that it might be stamped or written?

Cheers
Neil

Neil: my Mk III midget has the chassis no stamped into the drivers floor pan

Our hosts of yesterday, BMIHT, can almost certainly cross refer your body number with the car's actual Chassis number.

The body number is only part of the large amount of "history" you get when you apply for your Heritage trace certificate

Mine has chassis, body, engine gearbox and axle mnumber's in addition to colour, trim and accessory fit with dates of assembly (over couple of days in Lara's case)

Try a phone call to Gaydon in Tuesday (Bank hols tomorrow isnt it?)

Certificate costs about £35, a phone call before could confirm whether they have what you need

Thanks guys,
I think I will have to go with Bill's idea, as the car is a bitsa, ie A+ engine, Sierra box etc, and I'm sure the floorpans will heve been replaced at some stage, but nice idea thanks Dave. I really just want to know what I've got,

thanks

your body # seems to tally with an early 1968 Sprite, but as you know the RWA shell was 4 years later. Then again it's only held on by 2 screws. One possibility is a PO rebodied a 68 Sprite using a RWA shell 'cos that's all he could find at the time?

hi neil

Give Gaydon a call, as they are very helpful and will be able to identify your car's chassis number from the body number. However, as the build records are in order of chassis number not body number, the process is more time consuming. Hence they charge more for providing the details of the car's history via this route - the certificate costs £45 instead of £35 if you have the chassis no.
