MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Cherry bomb. Any good?

I'm looking for a new silencer. I've been running a motor cycle can type, but it'quite narrow and I'm sure it's strangling the engine (1133cc). I have a HIF44, an LCB exhaust manifold and 1.3/4" pipe right through to the box, but the box is only about 1.1/4" so I've junked it.
I was thinking about a Cherry Bomb and although I feel it would perform well I'm bit concerned about how loud it would be. Anyone had any experience with these?

I ran my 1600cc midget(ford engine) on one for 2 years -- I dont remember it being too loud -- It was sometime ago (24 years)

The sound of an exhaust is not only determined by the exhaust system, but it dpends upon the CR of the engine and the cam design that is used.

I don't particularly like cherry bombs but many people love them. If a car has a good state of tune and is only fitted solely with a cherry bomb then I think on extended journys it is too noisy. However that is only my opinion.

Robert is correct....Its a matter of taste to the individual, If My chrome side pipes dont pan out the way I want, then Im definatly going to use the cherry bomb classic orginal straight though I think is what they call it...It appears to be about the same size and shape as my current muffler

I had a Cherry Bomb for years

- and yes it was far too damned noisy for long trips abroad.

I now use the (whisper it) MGOC stainless system and it was a lot quieter without being slow, but I think it has nigh on reached the end of its useful life (4 or 5 years in use now)

starting to be as raucous as the Bomb was

RC40 is next on my list, retaining the stainless pipery.

I forgot...they got sound files on there website that makes the music there various mufflers are supposed to sound like...But I wouldnt buy there box lunch propaganda as fact ...Its more for fun then anything.

Thanks chaps. I think the RC40 could be a possibility as the cherry bombs on that site you put on Prop were way too loud.
Another freind of mine is going the RC40 route and I know he wants performance without too much noise.
Anyway, got to get the type9 'box in first.
Thanks again to everyone. There's always a good cross section of opinions on this site which really helps if you're not quite sure about something.

How about getting both and controll them with a electrical switch?
Im thinking to build on in next year, driving with the "normall" exhaust and when you want to make noice( waking up the neighbours at 2.00am, scare the living crape out of someone when overtaking or just having fun in tunnels) you flip the switch and have the raw power and noice for as long as you want it.

We have "magic midget" round type silencers on both the midget and frog, nice sound that is not to noisy (95db ish) repackable and alloy / stainless construction. No noticable reduction in performance when compared to the RC40.

On the Aston pull fuse F11 & it prevents the bypass from closing, so you get the nice noise even at low revs.

Very quiet at idle but it became "the rage of Thor" above about 4000rpm, almost as if you were pressing a switch. Painful because the steering wheel was on the 'wrong' side. I think it came off a bike called a Z1.

On our Morris Minor sidevalve engine you get that funny Fwwwwwwrrrrppp as you slow down and the loudness can be changed by playing with the ignition timing. I haven't worked that one out, yet.

for max power and free-flow route you should have the exhuast coming straight through / no silencer; and use the gizmo to shut of the straight route so the gas has to go down the arm with the silencer attacher.

You could use the Emerald to operate the device automatically say about 5K rpm.

I think it would work best with Calos Fandango wheels and arch extensions.

I once (80s) fitted BRB with Peco exhaust; fine around town but drove (sic) me bonkers on long runs by being too loud. Some say I never recovered.

BTW2 - non-Brits might be interested to know (bit of a guess from me on this) that cigar lighter wasn't standard fitment in a Ford Anglia.)
