MG Midget and Sprite Technical - differential seals

I have some gear oil under the car. Looks like its leaking from the main seal at the front of the diff. I need some recommendations on what would be wise to complete at the same time. Also any tips from the gurus on rear ends would be great. Thanks CJ

"the gurus on rear ends" Arie where are you when we need you?

9 out of 10 times its the drain plug not the gasket. Are you sure its the gasket? If so its cheap to replace. Only you have to drain oil, remove halfshafts (buy new gaskets and O ring for them too) and remove a zillion nuts. Make sure the faces are clean
Bas Timmermans

no Bas - CJ thinks it's the main seal inside the nose of the diff, I agree.
CJ - there's stuff in the archive from people who have done it (I haven't).
David Smith

Bas, was that Diff you got from me any good ?
K Harris

Ken,

Still no time to fit the Diff. Checked the backlash and all seems to be ok. I have it well wrapped up in oil so when time comes it will be inserted.

But since we got a new home with a huge garden its gardners work all the time:-( But a beer afterwards is allmost as good as after a midget job:-)

Thanks for the info guys. Another stupid question, when halfshafts are removed, should I get diff oil out the ends or is that a bad axle oil seal. Yes I forgot to drain the diff. doh!
CJCharvet

Holy crap everybody, how did I not notice that all of the oils seal, o-ring and gasket were missing when i replaced the rear shoesa few years ago?! My left side drum was convered with oil on the inside. Nothing really remarkable on the outside. Wow, I feel dumb.

Can anyone verify that the rear hub oil seal is inside of the bearing? My haynes manual and moss catalogue diagrams verify this but the vicky brit catalogue has them reversed. Looks like it is behind the bearing. Thanks.
CJCharvet

The seal is on the inboard side of the bearing carrier. Are you thoroughly confused now?

From diff out...

Diff
Hub Carrier
Oil Seal
Bearing
O Ring
Gasket
Half Shaft

Thanks Dave and Toby. The only thing that confused me was the word "obfuscational". I was completely missing the o-ring and gasket, which is kind of minor considering a two inch chunk of brake drum came off in my hand during removal. Somebody upstairs loves me! Well, looks like I'll be parked for a couple of days. But new parts are on the way! Woohoo!
