MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Door chrome mouldings

I am currently putting the chrome trim on my MkII midget and would like your views. The front and rear wings are original and so have the holes already in. These are no problem and I have refitted the chrome. I have reskinned the doors however and now need to attach the chrome strips. The Moss catalogue shows that 5 clips are needed together with a stud plate that is positioned centrally on the strip. This doesn't make sense as you would think you would have the stud plate with 2 clips then either side. Has anyone else fitted the chrome door mouldings? I am a bit dubious of drilling my freshly painted doors but will do so. Any tips gratefully received.
Thanks,
Neil

Hello Neil, apologise for this late response but work and other cars stood in the way.I don't think there is a difference but my car is a mk III gan4 Midget. There are indeed 5 clips and a stud plate, in the attached picture I have also written the location of the holes starting from the left/front of the door.
Hopes this helps.

Pascal,
You are a star. You are the only one to reply. The question must have been too difficult!!!
I can see now how they are intended to fit.
A bit of a bugger to do as you need to make sure the door is in the spot on position before the holes are drilled. I have not done the job yet but will do so in the next week or so. I let you know how I get on.
Thanks,
Neil

Neil,

My advice is to use masking tape to set out and drill through - helps to stop the dreaded drill skip - a small centre 'pok' with an 'auto' centre punch is also a good idea if you have one, again to stop drill drift.

And support behind the panel with a dollop of timber when you "pop" the centres so you dont "dish" the whole panel

the automatic centre punch is avaluable tool, but manual "pop-p-ping" with the aid of the beautiful assistant can be just as satisfying

(couldnt help you with the hole positions, my chrome was installed ten or more years ago)

Why not fill the groove on the back of the chrome stip and sand it smooth. The with double side trim tape put it on the car without drilling any holes.

I tried a strip of plastic inside the chrome with rare earth magnets epoxied on. Worked pretty good, great for positioning to find where you want things, not strong enough for use.
I have to do this to my '63 and have dragged my heels. PO filled all holes, trying to get the courage up to take a drill to it.

Neil, your question wasn't to difficult you asked it in the wrong season, 99,99 percent of the garages are just to cold to be in. :)

Good luck with the fitting of the chrome trim.

Hi Pascal,
Fitted the drivers door moulding today. Drilled the 6 holes. Job done. Passenger door tomorrow.

Any pictures Neil so we can judge you did well? ;)

Hi Arie,
Will take some photos over the weekend. Have been fitting my new Cobra Classic Signature seats today. They look dead cool.

I bought someclips off Moss to fit the moulding on the passenger door and they seem a fraction too big for the moulding. The moulding won't clip over the fitting. The ones I used to fit the drivers door moulding were some I had bought some time ago from Moss and appear slightly smaller. Anyone else had this problem. I'm going to try and get some from a different supplier in the hope they might fit.
Frustration.

Neil I've not had the problem with moulding clips as my car doesn't have them, but I bought two flywheel locking tabs from Moss recently and they were nothing like right. too thick and the holes were nowhere near in the right place. I don't know where they're getting their stuff from, but some of it ain't good.
