MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Door glass removal
Help! How do I get the door window glass out? I eventually need to transfer everything to new doors & have removed trim, door locks & handles but don't know where to start with the glass & quarterlights. Advice appreciated. Thanks Paul |

Paul - You'll need to unbolt the window lifter mechanism and fiddle it around until you can slip the lifter knobs out of the channel at the base of the glass. Then, once you've removed the weatherstrips from the window slot, you should be able to lift the glass right out. As for the quarterlights, there are a couple of bolts at the top of the front edge of the door, along with another (or more... it's been a while) at the bottom of the forward window track, well down on the inner door panel. Once all the fasteners have been removed, the quarterlight assembly should lift out of the door. That's pretty simplified! Hope it helps, -:G:- |

Gryf You seem to have missed out the step after removing the 3 bolts holding the quarterlights where you have to struggle like hell!! But don,t worry none of this is anywhere near as hard as putting it all back!!!! It can be done so good luck Carl |

I've just put a new dropglass in my driver door following a mechanism failure on the way back from Gaydon. Fiddling in that door space always makes me swear and puts me one step closer to insanity. I find it easier to loosen off the quarterlight bolts before trying to play with the drop mechanism. Gives a little more space (but not a lot!). The even more fun bit is putting the rubber seals back. Hahahaha! (disturbed hysterical laughter). |

Carl - >>> You seem to have missed out the step after removing the 3 bolts holding the quarterlights... <<< Yeah, now I seem to remember that part! I once tried to remove my quarterlight assemblies to replace the rubber seals that fit between the frames and the door tops. I finally ended up just slitting the seals on the inner side to fit them around the vent window hardware. It wasn't worth the frustration. And Bob's comment about replacing the window seal strips is spot on. I've done a lot of stuff with my car in the 13 years I've owned it, and those confounded weatherstrips STILL take the cake for being the single most frustrating job yet. -:G:- |

Restoring Migets and Sprites by, I think Graham Bristow (or something similar) gives a step by step account of doors. VERY useful. |

...as does MG midget Reborn by Dr Peter Berkin which is especially descriptive of the re-assembly sequence. |

Everyone seems to have forgotten to tell you to buy some elastoplast. |
