MG Midget and Sprite Technical - drag racing midget

Took the car to the strip for the first run of the season.Managed to run 14 seconds with 99mph terminal without the nitrous. The clutch is very marginal, and I've got the cam mis-timed I think,it's very peaky and this does not work well.I believe I need to advance the cam quite a bit to improve it.

That's pretty quick... around 5.5s (certainly <6s) to 60?

I suppose so.The 60 ft times were poor - over 2 seconds, because I had to boot it too hard to stop it bogging down, hence much wheelspin.
steve cowling

Santa Pod?

Steve, is yours a red(damask red?) midget?
I may have seen you last year at race retro at SantaPod.
Didnt had my drivinglicence on me and therefore wasnt allowed to give it a go...
Loked like a lot of fun so will be back someday!
Arie de Best

Arie, that Stewart's car with nos lol and 12 inch wheels on the back.
K Harris

Hi Arie,no this was at Shakespeare County Raceway near Stratford,my car is yellow (see below).Interested in anyone else running a Midget on the strip, who is Stewart?

steve cowling

Ken, you must be right, going out with the MG-dragraceclub soon again?
Ive checked the Santa Pod Retro festival and sadly its not in my holliday this year... :(
Looking forward too seing you and Nicky next week at Burghley.

Steve, thats some piece of work youve build there, brilliant!
I especialy like the wheels, always been a sucker for the Wolfrace wheels.
But have been playing with the idea of getting some spare minilites and paint them black.
When looking at yours I see black minilites look good.

Have you got anymore pictures of your rollbar/hoop?
Btw, are you planning to drop by at Midget 50 next week?
Arie de Best

Here you go Arie, the hoop is thickwall stainless from a cobra kit car.Fits over two thickwall stub tubes welded to plates bolted through the body.
Regarding wheels,I got the Wolfrace fronts off the bay,but the rears are new Compomotive MLs because I needed a lot of backspace to tuck the wheel in the arch. The axle is a shortened Ford with Atlas shafts and could not be narrowed any more.

Steve,
Ken's talking about me!
I drag the Damask Red Midget down Santa Pod on occasion.
Biggest difference twix yours & mine is that I have to use mine as a car to take the wife on runs & also be a daily driver too.

Ken's a little out of date now, no longer run 12" wheels as I've dropped to a 4.2 LSD (all still Midget).
Did my first runs of the year with a rebuilt engine yesterday (Saturday) and creamed my previous PB of 16.459s with a 15.438s (modest by your standards I guess). I was running a 20 shot of Nos.

Arie & Ken, I'll be at Burghley next weekend - it'll be good to meet up - look out for the Northants MGOC flags, mine will be beside one!

Stu are you convoying up to M50, breakfasting first, as with Sprite50, with Mark?
N Atkins

Hi Stu,glad there is someone else turned on by this straight line stuff!I've never persuaded my wife to ride in mine, but it does get used for local journeys (and frightening the locals....)
steve cowling

Used to do the RWYB days with the Civic

PB of 13.08 @ 109mph

Wouldnt dream of taking the Midget up the strip, it would mean I have to take back all those words i ever muttered about Drag Racing being a talent free sport. :P
PeterJMoore

"Stu are you convoying up to M50?"
A couple of us Northants MGOC members are running together but otherwise, no.
Stu Simons

N Atkins
