MG Midget and Sprite Technical - dual master cylinder

hi all,
on the dual master cylinder, if i remove the clutch slave and all the fluid runs out does it effect the brakes or is there a separate part for that in the master.
thanks bob.

There is a weir in the reservoir which should stop fluid draining from each half. You will know if it works when you replace (and bleed) the clutch slave and hit the brake pedal.

As I recall, as Les says, there is separation at the bottom of the master cylinder chamber, or at least there was on mine!
If you didnt know already, see the tips for both slotting the slave, and raising the off side on bleeding the clutch.

The main reservoir has a partition at the bottom to give (minimal) separation of the two systems - it probably holds around the volume to feed the cylinder underneath for a single stroke of the relevant pedal.

Even if you were to empty the main reservoir completely, as long as you don't pump the brake pedal, no air will enter the cylinder part, and topping up when you have finished will not lead to any need for bleeding the brakes.

But it is often forgotten that brake fluid should be flushed periodically so bleeding your brakes anyway to clear all the old fluid may be due in any case. If you have the car raised to do the slave, then it's only a 20 minute job to flush the brakes as well before you finish (providing of course the bleed nipples are not rusted solid!).

Put a piece of carrier bag under the master cylinder cap to stop atmospheric pressure pushing the fluid out when you remove the slave cylinder and your fluid loss should be minimal. Remember to remove it when finished.
Used this method recently when replacing a rear brake slave rubber in the village square at Airvault, France, when a friend's Frogeye's brakes began to fail.
