MG Midget and Sprite Technical - engine/gearbox weight?
Hi I am looking to buy an engine crane and have been trying to determine the weight of the midget 1500 engine and gearbox. I would guess around 225kg. Any ideas welcome thanks tony

have a look in Archives, I'm sure someone here is a weight obsessive for parts and components (is it Norm? I can't remember)

Effing heavy! I lifted my engine out with a mate. Then gearbox on my own. I think 225 wouldn't be a bad conservative guesstimate! Malcolm

Hi, yep, that's me (funny, Nigel!). The 1500 engine and transmission should weigh in at round about: Cast Iron "Marina" Transmission = 36 kg 1500 Engine = 132 kg total = 168kg. Or, approximately 20.5kg more than a 1275 + rib case. Norm full disclaimer: I've never weighed the 1500 parts, only the 1275 stuff. I put these numbers together from a collection of sources. The "engine weight website" http://fixrambler.com/engineweightchart.txt and what other folks have posted here, when they have weighed their own stuff.

oops, I added the wrong transmission (a Ford Type 9) to come up with that total. Correction: 1500 engine, with the matching, "Marina" transmission, the total should be closer to 155kg. Norm "weighty matters" Kerr

Many thanks your input. I think a one ton crane will do the job and have enough lift to clear the front panel with the car on ramps. thanks again tony
