MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Exhaust on 1380

Hi,

I have an 74 rwa 1380, currently has Moss ss sports exhuast single box, mgs50801,and ss manifold, tmg10862, on it from when it was 1275.

It's got a nice note but a bit noisey. I'm looking for something that might give a bit more power, but is quieter.

Ive had a look at the archives and a few people like the RC40 from minispares, and also the maniflow systems.

Any suggestions as to suitable setup? if you prefer maniflow the 2" or 1.75" ?

Thanks in advance.
Bruce Burrowes

Maniflow get my vote for performance and build quality.

As for size, that would depend on state of tune. It might be worth discussing with Maniflow, or Kim at Magic midget.

As Dave says. Standard 1275 (well +60 rebore) with a 1.75" Maniflow LCB and RC40 from Magic Midget, good fit and sounds bassy.
Good for up to 100bhp, so depends on what yours is producing.

I have often heard this RC40 system mentioned. Is it stainless steel, and if not, how long do they last?

The reason I ask is that my present stainless system has lasted well over 20 years and the silencer boxes are still sound. The only bit beginning to look a bit dubious is the tight bend into the rear box - its one of the transverse ones fitted cross-wise behind the fuel tank.

I know that soon I will be needing a new system but don't want the hassle of replacing rotting boxes every few years as is often the case with poor quality modern car replacement systems.

I fitted Kim's RC40 system to my 1380
It is not stainless ( stainless sounds crappy imo due to the metal being a thinner gauge)
It sounds perfect
First one I did not paint and it lasted 4 years of daily driving through a couple of our most horrid (lots of road salt) winters before I blew a hole in the pipe.
Second one I fitted 4 years ago with a lick of heat resistant paint and it is fine for a couple of years more.

Before it had an expensive stainless system fitted that did not rust but after a few years the 1380 blew out all the dampening so I could not start it without waking up all the neighbours

thanks the posts are very useful.

I started the car this afternoon and an elderly lady 10m down the road had a fright, I thought the noise was in the "not that bad" category, but after apologising i realised it probably isn't.

I have emailed Kim at Magic Midget.

Guy,
not stainless (but you can have them in s/s if you prefer), installed 2010, only used in goodish weather, long pipe is showing signs of surface rusting but otherwise sound and they do seem to be decent quality.

Another vote for Kim Dear from me for info and purchase.

Or you could have a silencer made up and stuffed to your noise requirement from one of the many exhaust places that make up for more modern bling cars, the cost need not be high but the quality of materials and work can be surprisingly high.

For some background, the RC40 was developed by Minispares specifically to cater for the off-normal pulses generated by the siamesed central port. David Vizard tested one in his "how to Tune A series engines" and reported no real measurable power loss up to 120bhp.

They are not stainless as standard, but can be bought (that fit) from Kim, or that need a bit of cutting and welding from Minispares themselves.

I have one on my K series car, it's the same one that was on the A series. I've had it on for some 11 years now and it's still good. my K makes 121 bhp and 98lbft from its 1400 engine so it can't be getting in the way that much!

Mine's fitted between the tank and the leaf spring (just - not a lot of spare space)

Anything over 10 years lifespan would be OK. Something that lasts less than this is just a pain, and 4 years is just not acceptable to me.

Given the low price and the conditions it was driven in I think it is very acceptable.
And painted it will last longer.
