Thanks Dan, can never have too many manuals and I don't think I have this one.

Cheers mate.

The Haynes manual that covers the stripdown is number 903, FORD SIERRA 4cyl, petrol inc.Sapphire, 1982 to 1992.
HALL JOHN

I have that John, hasn't helped me a lot in the past TBH.

The Ford item is very valuable though, 'specially if you have all the special tools. :))

I do have a manual on a memory stick too, thanks to a good mate, but a version on .pdf has to be a welcome extra.

Bill,
slightly off topic but I was thinking of you this week while driving, I think the gear shifts on the type-9 using the Castrol may be better in winter than even summer (or perhaps the g/box is wearing-in or more likely wearing out) but I thought the shifts seemed better last winter too
Nigel Atkins

Nigel I am finding shifting OK with the Comma stuff but sadly I have to accept that there will be a strip down coming soon, the box is sounding awfully harsh.

Maybe a few bob on the Castrol will quieten it down, so that may be the first thing I try.

Or it will be spend it on the box or spend it in France in June.

Hard decisions, but once bitten...
Bill1

Bill,
as I put before I don't think swapping to Castrol would make it quieter but I could well be wrong

if you have a separate drain plug then dropping the existing oil out might show you the box condition then you could filter the oil and reuse or refill with Castrol

I guess you'd sooner not know but I'd also guess the dead line for booking Le Mans will soon rush round

Sawdust

Don't they say that sawdust helps quieten gearboxes?

;-)

Good job I'm not selling her soon, people might talk.

Yes Nigel I will drop the new/old oil out first, then decisions need making...
Bill1

Bill,
others have suggested stockings too IIRC, not sure about tights though or long-johns

personally if I dropped the Comma oil out through a bottom drain hole I'd put fresh oil in and it'd be the Castrol in just to nurse things along, placebo maybe but as it's cold and the Castrol gives better cold changes ... as a certain supermarket's advertising has it, every little helps
Nigel Atkins

Hi Bill,
Is it noisy when changing, or when running in gear? All gears? IIRC, there are needles on the laygear shaft that get very noisy when worn. Or rather, when worn, they allow the laygear to displace sideways which upsets their nice smooth meshing with the mainshaft clusters, and this generates the noise. Catch it soon enough, and it is a simple job of just replacing the needles. leave it too long and the gear clusters wear! :-(
Guy Weller

My T9's a pig to get into 1st gear in cold weather, irrespective of which oil I use in it. Currently it's the comma oil recomended by BGH. When I've driven a few miles or less though, it's much easier. Actually I suspect I have worn synchros, as even when warm, 1st is a bit notchy.
Lawrence Slater

plus the Comma is less money

a deal sealer for :)
Nigel Atkins

:)

Nigel, I will be using better oil when emptied.

Guy the noise seems to be in all gears so it is possible the laygear bearings are at fault, I expect the box will be out again in late January. Lara has a trip or three to do before I bow to inevitability...

Aha,yes Nigel there is always a drain hole in any type 9 I fit.

Next best thing to fitting a 9 to a Spridget is making sure it can be maintained proper like.

Lawrence as I said earlier the shifting is still like a dream, which my old ribcase couldn't claim to.

Nightmare more like, until it jammed me in a pair of gears on my drive.
Bill1

Bill I have to say I didn't think or ask about a drain hole when ordering - another mistake I am paying for

I thought the Capri I had just before my midget was a 'filled-for-lfe' but it had a bottom drain hole so possibly (I can't remember now) I expect I might have assumed the type 9 was the same or thought a reconditioned box without a drain wouldn't matter for a very good number of years after all I was buying from and having THE specialist experts advise me and doing the work

my Capri, a 1981 2.0S belonged to my neighbour for its first 25 years of life, (most of which he wasn't my neighbour) with less than 100k on the clock and I'd known the car almost from the day it was collected from the dealership

it had the four speed box that had big thick exposed levers under the car, they looked like they'd work on a tank

as is my wont I changed the g/box and back axle oil soon after getting the car and as is my mind now I can't remember which oil came out of where now but one was IIRC red and seemed fine (so probably g/box) where as the other drained out like water
Nigel Atkins

how did I miss that (?) - Lawrence can you please just confirm/clarify that >>My T9's a pig to get into 1st gear in cold weather, irrespective of which oil I use in it.<< excludes Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90 Fully Synthetic MTF (GL-4) as you've not tried it in your type 9 gearbox
Nigel Atkins

As it says nigel. I'm using the BGH suggested comma oil. My box is notchy in 1st, and needs synchros. So I'm not going to pour in a more expensive oil until I swap it for one of my spare T9's or rebuild this one. But once that's done i might well try the castrol, or the original ford oil, which "is" still available, as I discovered last year -- at a price.
