MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel catalyst for unleaded

Just browsing through ebay and came across this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TRIUMPH-SPITFIRE-MG-midget-RUN-ON-95-UNLEADED-TO-1500CC_W0QQitemZ160296955397QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item160296955397&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A265%3A1039%3A1240%3A1318

It's a solid catalyst that is supposed to go in the fuel tank and eliminate the need for liquid additive in the modern 95 RON lead free petrol.

Is there anyone who has any experice from this or similar or is it "turning lead into gold"? Never heard of such a product before. Would be nice if it works but I am sort of sceptical.

magic beans, father christmas, the easter bunny I can believe in, this I don't, but he seems to sell a lot of them

Far better to have the head converted to run on unleaded. I've not looked back since I had my Midget done over 10 years ago.

snake oil, smoke and mirrors

better spend the money in the local bars

and just as likely to save your engine...

This topic keeps coming up

and we always advise the same answers

petrochemical works spent billions on producing fuels with tetra-ethyl lead in them

and some geezer claims to have the same result with a wirebasket of lead lumps?

not good science

not any science

very few engines have suffered valve seat recession since the arrival of unleaded petrol, I never used additives in mine before I won my Metro head

Stale.
That's some science right there.

I've not looked back since I fitted an unconverted leaded head from an MG Metro 5 years ago and did nothing.

Oh - apart from the odd fill of leaded every few months, just to top up the protection.

Don't worry. Be happy.

Last weekend I attended a tech session given by Glenn Lehard, Floridas most respected mg specialist. Glenn spoke about the need for a fuel stabilizer in cars sitting idle for a month or more due to the seperation of the gasoline from the etanol, wich he stated is heavier and attracts water, leaving an ethanol/water concentration at the bottom of the tank.
I don't know about mixtures in Europe or the UK but over here most petrol is 10% Ethanol.

Phil,

in Sweden we are running on 5% ethanol. They are considering increasing it to 10% but when that will happen is unknown. I think there are som European directives stopping it but I'm not sure.

On the general topic it seems like everyone is as sceptical as I.

Phil,

with a standard Sprite having a fuel tank not much bigger than a motorbike we're not talking long before a fresh amount is added.
Brad (Sprite IV 1380)

Using an additive like Castrol Valvemaster gives you the best of both worlds at little expense. i.e. valve protection and a raised octane rating.
RON 95 unleaded seems a bit low in the octane stakes for what are fairly high compression engines.

Brad, Iwas refering to cars that sit more than a month or so. Glenn stated that any driving/sloshing of fuel would eliminate the problem.
