MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fuel Pressure Regulator
I don't have one, and I suspect I should. I have a Weber 45 DCOE and Facet Silver Top fuel pump. I'm not sure whether it's the Road or Fast Road spec pump but either way I understand from the archives that it'll be supplying higher pressure then the Weber needs. I believe they are 4.5 and 6.5 psi respectively. I have come to musing on fuelling because my carb is returning to its old ways i.e. the engine will occasionally die at idle unless I catch it, usually when drawing to a halt at junctions etc. Seems like the carb may be flooding as it takes a deal of turning over to get it going again. Now this seemed to be cured when it was in for a tune up last year so presumably it is caused by incorrect float heights or dirty jets (which were adjusted & cleaned at the tuning) or somesuch, but I would still like some advice from the wise on whether I should fit a regulator and what the practical advantages would be. Would the fitment necessitate re-tuning in itself? |

Most folks use a filter regulator with their weber. It is possible that the pressure from certain electronic pumps will overcome the needle valve and as you say would flood the carb. Normally if this flooding was severe then I would expect to be able to smell fuel when it occured but not necessarily. With that in mind you can not do harm by adding one and good engineering practices would advise fitting so get on with it as a first step. |

not knowing which version of pump you have doesn't help; if you match components together then a regulator is completely unnecessary and is just something else to play with and maladjust, and also something else which introduces potential points of failure or leaks. Can you borrow a fuel pressure gauge off somebody local and rig it up so it can be seen while driving, then you will have some useful data to base a diagnosis on. |

Jordan. Your Silver Top Facet will almost certainly be delivering too much pressure, the DCOE only needs 2.5 / 3 psi max (for road use). I use Filter Kings on cars that I do, and I get the ones with the pressure gauge take off point so that I can set the pressure accuratly. (I also have the Filter King fuel pressure gauge). Mark. |

Even the low capacity silver top provides about 4.5-5 psi which as mark says is too much. I've just installed a filter king and It seems to do everything it says it does on the box. Good bits of kit and worth the 35 quid. |

As Mark says, I run a 45DCOE and a facet pump (not sure which one) on my first visit to the RR after building the engine he fitted a Filter king and reduced the pressure to around 2-3 psi, it been there ever since. Mark |
