MG Midget and Sprite Technical - fuel tank slushing

Hi all,

I've ordered the POR15 fuel tank repair kit from Frosts and I'm yet to use it.

Anyone had any experience of the stuff?

Heard reports from other people that it peels off and screws the whle system up, due to modern fuel addatives

I have used this system , and found it to be an excellent product. The secret is to follow the instructions ,and get cleaning and preparation steps correct.

Paul, I had a tank sealed professionally. They steamed it out and put in some sort of liquid I guess that lined the tank. I guess because I don't know what it was as I wasn't there but it was light coloured and impervious to fuel (as it better be if it's a fuel tank sealer!). If memory served, it was about $100.00 for the whole thing.

Perhaps that might be the way to go if you are concerned about the lining peeling off. Mind you, if it's being sold as a fuel tank repair kit, if there was problems, it wouldn't be out there for long would it?

Paul / Clive.

Why repair your tank when new replacements are available at a similar cost?

I used Frost restoration stuff on a tank around 1991. Still working fine in 2008

Cheers guys. I'll give the stuff a try.

Mark, It's not for a midget fuel tank! And the new tank would be a lot more than a hundrend quid!

Paul, in which case, follow the instructions to the letter...!

Good luck.

Mark, I didn't have a Midget tank sealed, it was on a surplus military M38A1 jeep we had.

Clive.

Do you still have the M38A1..?

I love these as a Jeep. Fully waterproof ignition, 12 or 24volt electrics, still great off road capabilities and style....!

Me, I just have a 'Flat Fender'... a '42 GPW.

Mark.

Pic shows a friend 'playing on New Years Day 2005 in his M38A1. Note Flat Fenders and Land Rover 'Lightweight' in the back ground.

Aw, Mark, poor you for having a flat fendered jeep. Actually, I'm O.D. green with envy. (LOL) I had a 43 GPW for a number of years. It's still around and I have the first refusal when/if the fellow sells it.

Sadly I no longer have the A1. My wife wanted a jeep with doors that locked. I searched everywhere for a hard top for it but had no luck. Regretfully we sold it to a fellow in Quebec but that's a whole new story. Ended up with a used 93 YJ/Wrangler and she wouldn't drive it! She drove it a whole 20 miles in total. I used it more than she did and sold it off last year.

Can't find any decent military jeeps around now and those that are for sale are way too expensive. Fellow was trying to sell an ex Canadian army 1970 A1 for $25000.00! Needless to say no one was nibbling at that price, however, I might be able to obtain a 1952 M-38 if I try hard enough.

Clive, Flat Fenders have allbut dried up here in the UK now, just restored examples change hands now and again and at some silly prices too...!
As for A38 and A1 models, I've not seen one on the market for a while.
I've owned my GPW since 1982, I also have a 1944 GMC CCKW 353 'Airborne Tipper' (very rare here) on a long term loan, but get little chance to use it at the moment with fuel prices as they are...!
My dream was to own a very early MB with the 'slatt grill' but they fetch silly prices now.
In my time, I have been fortunate to have ridden in or driven Willys MA and also GPA, plus Bantam and Ford GP and many many Tracked Armoured vehicles...!
Green Machines... I love 'em

Mark.

Mark T. Boldry

Mark, that's a really nice CCKW! Ex-military vehicles are few and far between here. WWII Canadian CMPs do exist here and there but most of them have been recovered for preservation/parts.

Most of the vehicles remaining here are from the 50's and later with WWII being scarce and pre-war vehicles almost non-existant.

Fortunately not everything was sent for scrap when they broke down or wore out and the vehicle preservation movement got a really good foothold in the late 70s.
