MG Midget and Sprite Technical - GAN6 Hazard Warning Switch

1979 MG midget GAN6 UK car

The car was purchased with 6k miles and one owner in 1981 and is still with the second owner today at 130K Miles. No alteration have been made to the loom.

The hazard warning switch needs replacing. Should be easy to find a new one but not so.

The part listed in all the books is BHA 5267. The pictures show spade terminals as the one on the car in question. All the usual suppliers of this part supply only a version with pin or post connectors.

The old switch is Lucas part 39473 according to the number moulded in to it.

Does any one have a source of this part?

PS I have checked a 78 and a 89 Midget locally and they both have the pin or post type switch

I may have a spare used one in the garage.

Hiya,

Have you actually looked at what is fitted to the car?

Mine is a late '78 car and has the switch with the pins and the moulded plastic block on the loom.

It is also fairly easy to dismantle the switch and clean out the muck and goo and polish up the internal contacts on these old lucas switches.

A PO may have snipped that off and fitted spade terminals?

Either switch will be ok as long as its connected correctly.

Dave thanks for the offer - see email to you

S R Smith of Kent - thanks for your advice but just for information;-

The car in question was purchased in 1981 from the original supplying garage. It was 18 months old with 6000 miles on the clock. It is most unlikely that the PO or the supplying BL garage would make such a change in the first 18 months of the cars life.

The second and current owner has never removed this switch in the 32 years of ownership until now and then only because it was dodgey at the MOT - worked but not reliably.
The switch has broken by the rocker pivot which is why a replacement is needed.

Back in the 70s it was common for manufacturers to duel source major components made outside their company - wiring harness for one example. Thus I suspect is the reason for two types of switches.

The removed switch is a Lucas made part.
