MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gold Seal

Bonjour,I imported my frogeye from the UK two years ago and am slowly getting it in order. My question is, were Gold Seal engines automaticaly re-bored and by how much? Mine is a 1275 and I would like to know the capacity without opening it as it goes quite well just now, eng. no. GSE1106E 127679.
By the way for your registrar the car was previously reg. 9868HX and is chassis AN5/41041.
Apart from that if I could meet the person who welded the new floor he would learn some new language as he did not attach it to the crossmembers!
Merci, Alistair.

no, some were resleeved and then bored at standard size.
David Smith

As David said often sleeved and rebored standard - certainly the last G/seal i stripped was, not sure if all were however.

I seem to remember reading that it was easier to set up a run of rebuilds with standard bores and only standard sized pistons being required.

The only gold seal I've seen (1275 in a mate's midget) also had sleeved and std bores.

Hi Alistair,

Just a point of interest, I have a Frogeye reg No 5645HX chassis No AN5 38537. Not all that close to yours but possibly from the same dealer or certainly the same registration area, the Midlands I believe. Yours is the first one I've come across ending HX. It was first registered 26 5 1960. I too fitted a 1275 that had been a Gold Seal and it also has standard pistons fitted.

Hi John,
For your interest 9868HX was supplied by H.A.SAUNDERS, FINCHLEY, and was first registered 04/07/1960.
regards, Alistair.

I'll check the register when I get home but I seem top remember a few HX's. Also I was brought up in Finchley. Alistair would you have an addtess of where they used to be.

My Goldseal was also resleeved and was a standard 1275.

My car also had its first flush of youth courtesy of Saunders from Finchley but the registration is 674VMX which dates from 01/07/59. The 'Home Market Model' came without heater, washers or rev counter!
Whilst preparing the block, prior to rebuilding the 1275 engine, I came across some gold paint but the bores were unsleeved and the engine ident removed. Its now rebored to 1380cc.

Hi Mr.Lazurus,
Sorry no address for Saunders, my frog is now registered as a real Frog 353AKT29 and I expect the PO got a bit of loot for 9868HX.
