MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Greasing Front Hubs?
<Senior Moment> It's been quite a while, so please forgive me ... Pulled the front caliper and the front hub. Tapped out the ball-bearing assemblies. From there, best I could do was to finger-push wheel bearing grease in and around the shields on either side of the ball race. What SHOULD I be doing here?? Can I pop the shields and work the grease into the ball race?? </Senior Moment> chuck

That's basically it. I squeeze grease through using the palm of my hand, until I can see new grease coming out the other side of the bearing. I then leave a liberal coating on either side of the bearing before reinstalling. -:G:-

Inside front right bearing race crumbly! When I get the replacements (Monday) is there any orientation of inner and outer bearings I need to preserve?? chuck

when packing races with grease don't overpack, if you do it may overheat

| Chuck, YES. They have to be oriented correctly. If you are lucky, one side will be marked thrust and you can check the archives for which way the trhrust side should be in relation to the spacer. Otherwise, some vintages of Moss catalogs reference it as well. I would probably be more helpful, but I am a firm believer in ditching those ball bearings and installing tapered roller bearings without the spacer any time I have to open up a front bearing. I am sure the ball bearing were lovely in their day, but NOTHING else in the world seems to use that particular pair of bearings, so the current lot of replacements tend to be a bit slackwhen it comes to tolerances. OTOH, the TRB replacements are not an uncommon bearing and are available from multiple manufacturers. | Just got in a replacement set of front wheel bearings for the 72. UniPart number is GHK 1924. Somehow they just don't look quite right. I'll find out tomorrow for sure, but I'd like to know in advance. BTW - both inner and outer bearings say "Thrust" on one side. Should those sides face each other and the spacer?? thanks chuck in nc |
