MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Head going on - Air pump coming off

I started putting the head back on yesterday on my 73 1275 midget. It has the airpump with smog gear connected to the head. I have plugged the four holes in the head. Can I remove the Air pump and remaining plumbing. From what I understand no changes to the carb should be needed as this just added air to the exhaust valve. Is there anything else I need to do?
Thanks,
Allan

Allan -

As I understand it, when you plug the air injection ports in the head, the air pump is just ballast.

Out of curiosity, do the Pennsylvania state inspections require all the original smoggy bits to be in place? It used to be that way in Missouri, but it varies from state to state.

If you remove the injected air from the exhaust stream then by definition you would create a richer gas mix coming down the pipes? Do I have that right? You may want to lean out your carb(s) a bit to get a nice touch of rumble in the exhaust on deceleration, but it's not strictly mandatory.

In California the rules vary from county to county. In the urban areas inspection is required every 2 years, including a "visual inspection", that is: all factory installed equipment must be in sutu and functioning, or you fail inspection. No allowance for alterations or upgrades, regardless of what's coming out the tailpipe. Where I live, only when vehicle is sold. : )

I removed the air pump and plugged the holes in
the head (with allen bolts) many years ago. Yanked
all the air pump and it's rail and plumbing.

Then I opened the air pump and gutted the inside.
Got rid of all the vanes and stuff. And saved it.

Mostly I ran with the pump off. But once a year,
at NC inspection time, I reconnected the gutted
air pump. Law said it had to be there, but not
that it had to actually work.

Then I started to bring the car in for inspection
without the pump. No probs!

Now, here in NC, cars older than 35 years need not
get inspected so the pump is gone for good.

Why would you want to take the pump off anyway? It makes the burn cleaner, therefore, it makes the air we ALL breath cleaner. Do you think you are loosing massive amounts of power driving the airpump? It's no biggie.
