MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Head Identifcation

Hi,

anyone able to shed some light on what this head is orginally from? It has a bypass adapter underneath that connects it water pump hose.

The engine block is 1275 and says 12g, however looking at another post where Nigel A posted two pictures of heads with different alignment of the water tap and the thermostat housing is doesnt look like either.

The bypass adaptor was fully blocked as well, can I assume this not really needed as I've not seen this on other heads?

Bruce,
that was Dave O'Neill and his photos for different position of stat studs, not me, well beyond me.

Was that bypass blocked deliberately as it might have leaked of not.

Most road going cars do have the bypass, big debate about keeping or not.

I can tell you the one you have in at the moment might be a right bugger to get out.

If you replace it do yourself a favour and buy the longer adapter and use thick-walled good quality hose there (silicone kits available or off-cuts of existing) so that it's fit 'n' forget as it's a real PITA to get to when the head is fitted.

Is the casting a 12G240? See: http://www.minispares.com/article/Technical~Information/Fuel~Systems/Cylinder~head~-~Identification~by~casting~number.aspx?ids=6%7C15%7C1024&perma=cylinder-head-identification-by-casting-number

Thanks

Bruce,
are you sure it's that as 12G1279 comes up as -

Engine Block Stamping Identification Numbers
(Mini?) 1275GT / 1275 no tappet chest pre A plus

Bruce,
you want the number from the cylinder head, photo is too low resolution to make it out fully, they can be difficult to read even 'in the metal' (literally).

It looks like 12G940 to me.

Are you confusing block numbers with head numbers.

Nigel Atkins

It looks like 12G940 to me. It's definitely a 1275 head, anyway.

The 12G1279 block casting is the same for Mini & Spridget.
Dave O'Neill 2

Dave,
did you see Bruce's oil in water thread?

On that thread, do block, HG and cylinder head all match up as there's some bits in a couple of the holes showing.
Nigel Atkins

whoops, yes getting confused.

the head is stamped 12g940
BruceBurrowes

What made you think there was different alignment of the water tap and the thermostat housing?
Nigel Atkins

The thermostat housing looked to have a different alignement, but i now see its the same. Thanks for your help.
