MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Hiff 44 Needle and spring advice?

Hello all,

I have decided to move over to a single SU Hiff44 and am wondering which needle setup to use currently my engine is 1330, cooper s rods and pistons, Oselli stage 2 head, maniflow exhaust and manifold, I know its a bit of a minefield but I'm sure someone can point me in the right direction, also does any one know of a good supplier.

Thanks

Jon

Jon, if you stayed with the standard MG Metro red spring and BDL needle I think you would be quite happy enough for a basic arrangement and then if there was more needed I understand there is a program called winsu which can help you select an even better setup

For performance options I can reccommend a trip to Peter Burgess's rolling road when the single HIF is settled down. Peter got me about 90 at the flywheel just by fettling my BDL and ignition twisting...

Mine is 1293, fast road cam and MG Metro head

I use a Metro Dizzy too all 'lectronic.

A well worth the money experience.
Bill

Thanks Bill, where are Peter Burgess RR based?

Sadly for you mate Peter is way oop north in Derbyshire, maybe just a tad far huh?

Alfreton, just off M1 motorway

I agree with Bill about the needle. I have a polished and ported MG Metro head, 30thou overbore (is that 1293 - I dunno?), standard midget cam and Maniflow LCB exhaust. The standard MG Metro needle (BDL) is perfect. I have tried other needles but can't improve on the BDL. Ignition seems to be a critical thing to get right though. I have not tried Peter Burgess yet but am tempted.

Jon,
I know a good rolling road guy down in Croydon if that's not too far for you? He setup my engine and did a stunning job... and the some of the forum guys here have used it before...

Thanks Rich let me know their details but I do hate the drive to that part of London, it takes forever.

They're called Fastparts, and the guy who runs it is called Paul. Really, really on the ball with A series (used to race Minis years back) and a really honest chap.

And yes, driving there is absolutely crap.
