MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Identifying a gearbox

OK, I know, its that thing with a swizzel stick poking out of the top that one uses to make the engine stop from screaming.

But more specifically - I have bought a cheap rib-case as a spare/ back up for my Frog, which has a smooth-case of unknown condition. The rib-case was supposed to be from a 1275 midget but it doesn't have the reversing light switch so I don't think it can be. It may be from an earlier car, or from a moggie or maybe an A35?

What features etc would identify it?

Guy, 1275s didn't have rev lights for a year or more, so it could be. To ID it, clean the input shaft and remove the rubber inspection plugs in the bellhousing. Shine a good light through 1 hole and peer through the other. There will be a number stamped on the input shaft, just on the smooth bit behind the splines. 22G171 is M1000; 22G172 is 1275 Midget with Type A gears; 22G229 is 1275 Midget with B type gears. If there is no marking then it could be a straight cut gearset, or an after market set. Remove the side cover (watch the springs) and count the teeth on the input shaft - 19 is M1000 and 20 is 1275 Midget. 22 is SCCR gearset.

not a useful post in the slightest, but great advice :P

Thanks Peter, I agree with your comment on your advice!

Thanks too David. This is just the info I was after. As the gearbox isn't actually attached to anything ( I did say it was cheap!) it should be easier to check the numbers than squinting through the inspection holes with a torch!

maybe Guy - but even when unattached I do find it better to look through the holes to be looking at right angles to the faint stamping and make out what it says; then again my eyes are not what they used to be...
