MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Inertia Reel seat belts

Hi I have a 74 RWA midget
I cannot fit inertia reel seat belts because the fixing points are not horizontal. See photos Any ideas?

R Fowler

R Fowler There are inertia belts that can be fitted I think they are the securon ones. Hopefully someone will be along soon to confirm.

Whereabouts in Warwickshire are you? I am in Warwick

I have recently fitted a set to my Heritage shell - mountings were the same as my '72 donor.

The one I fitted were the newer type from Securon - the 'angle adjustable ones' so much better than the previous type I had - even works with the Alley Aerobar (rollover).

I think Mark from Cornwall has recently fitted similar.

They are available from Moss - make sure you get the Angle Adj type - they do two types - comes as a complete kit.

Will try to get a pic later.

Hope this pic helps - the belt is inclined, feeding vertically, the webbing turns horizontal over seat - runs very smoothly - even if it dosnt look that good a lead in the pic!

Richard.

Hi Carl

I'm not far from you (Kenilworth)

Richard

Thanks for the pic, yours mount on the side of the wheel arch (I have a fitting kit for this from MGOC)

The reel would have to ajust in the horizontal and vertical plane to fit (I think)

Or disable the tilt mechanism and rely on "recoil locking"

Does your style of belt allow for this?

Richard

Richard F,

Are your mounts not the same as mine - side of wheel arch - thought they were standard in RWA cars ?

With the Securon Adjustable angle ones you first select vertical or horizontal and then adust for the position or angle in that plane.
I will look for the instructions (safely filed somwhere !)and scan them - may be on their website.

If you have mounts as mine should be O.K.
Are you going to Stoneleigh - possibly have a look insitu.

Richard B

No mine are mounted on the front/top of arch (I've not seen another one in this place and MGOC seemed bemused when I phoned them)

It sounds like the securon jobbies will be the answer, I will give Moss a call.

I can't make to Stoneleigh (even though it's only 15 mins away from me!!) Prior engagement.
Shame cause Moss may be their and save the postage.

Thanks for your help.

In your first photo the finger seems to be pointing at a hole in the carpet where the mounting normally is - a raised steel threaded boss. It corresponds with a circular reinforcing in the wheel arch behind.
Do you not have this ?

If that belt is mounted in the position in the photo it does not look original to me. Is it reinforced ?
Needs to carry a massive loading.

The carpet needs sticking down (I pulled it up looking for another fixing point nothing thier) I considered (briefly) drilling one but would rather not.

The fixing points I have look original (it's a threaded steel boss as you discribe, the paint looks original and undisturbed))and strong but I dont really know how to tell.

The car was built in "74" (I checked just in case it was an earlier car and RFL exempt) This model year would have had seat belts and points installed from the factory.

I can't understand this. I've never seen a mounting point other that at the side of the wheelarch and never where your belt is currently fixed. In your first picture there is a dimple in your carpet just where I would expect the fitting to be (is that just a coincidence). However, I don't see why a Securon belt would not work in the position of your existing belt once adjusted and the advantage would be that the belt would not have the twist in it that mine has (and presumably others have).

Richard B - you're right, I fitted securons just like yours recently. About a hour's work and they're brilliant.

Richard F - I'm puzzled by the positioning on the seatbelt anchors, but if they're proper seatbelt bosses, go for it with the Securons - they'll definitely be able to cope with mounting in that position.

Let me add another vote for the Securon belts. When I bought mine a few years ago, I also ordered the mounting brackets that raise the reels and orient them horizontally. But when installing the things, I came to prefer bolting them directly into that large threaded boss, vs. the two smaller studs on top of the inner arch. I was then able to adjust the reels via the setting knobs until the belts pull out and retract effortlessly, even with the reels mounted at an angle. I returned the bracket kits for a refund.

Hope this helps,

Have a 74 (23 March to be precise)RWA in Northern Warwickshire with Securons and brackets - easy fitting and work fine, though do tend to rub on the top of the seat back just a little.

Pics hopefully attached

And another picture

Thanks Guys

Securon seem the way to go.

Robin you seem to have mounting points on the top of your archs instead of the side, interesting.

Seems like a complex bracket you have rather than being able to just bolt it down.
R Fowler

Can't remember any side mounting points (was 10 years ago I fitted them!)but bracket came with kit and helps reduce drag on seat top.

If you want to look then happy to trundle in your drection this week as an excuse to give Miss midge a run out before Stoneleigh!

PM me if need be

As a good (Scots) friend used to say "get drunk in the morning that way you stay drunk all day"
(but I'm sure its nothing compared to what you get up to in Holland)

R Fowler, my lawyer has instructed me to give no comment. ;)
