MG Midget and Sprite Technical - ipod direct wire

I am wanting to hard wire my midget with an ipod instead of using the cigar lighter that i recently fitted. I have a sony cd / radio / MP3 player in the car and it does take the ipod throught the front but it does not charge the ipod at the same time. Any ideas how I can do this chaps ?

There are plenty of people out there flogging integration kits, it should just be a matter of finding the right one for your IPod and Head unit...

Might this fit the bill? -

Thanks Mark I just want to have a cable that I can put an inline fuse on and connect to the spare spade connector on the fuse box. The problem I face is when I come to cut up the ones that connect to the cigar lighter it appears the cable is way too thin and I do not think it would accomodate the power !

A word of warning!! I was told today by a car audio specialist that the latest range of I-pods are charged using 5v not 12v like the older ones. This means that any docking stations, head units etc that where intended for the older type will not charge the newer ones! Nice one Apple!

Carl - yes indeed! They charge on 5V because that's what USB carries. They used to have a 12V input socket as well but they've left that off the newest ones.

PE - In my humbe opinion, the integration kit is the way to go, it eliminates all the headaches and potential to blow up your Ipod... If you don't want to use the kit, at the very least you will need a step-down transformer from 12V to 5V.

And I wouldn't be concerned about the light cable - the current draw of an IPod is miniscule.

Thanks for that chaps, it looks like the integration kit is the way to go then. I have an i-pod touch and so think that this will fall into the category of being the newer type. I presume that the cigar lighter "plug in" will have to do for the time being.
