MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Large AF Sockets

Im looking to buy some larger than 1 AF sockets that may require to be used on British cars from the 50s to 80s.

Rather than buy all the sizes from 1 to 3 AF, Im looking to have the popular ones that would be on BMC and Standard Triumph cars not commercials.

What I have found to date are detailed below, has any one further suggestions.

1 5/16 lots of BMC cars and I have a one.34mm is similar.

1 13/16 1500 midget and 1500 Spitfire crankshaft pulley nut. 46mm is similar.

1 7/8 Midget rear hub nut. 48mm is similar.

I will buy impact sockets that are hex i.e. six sided.

I noticed the MGA has a 1 15/16 eight sided rear hub nut but they seem difficult to source and I only know of one car in the area, so I will let the owner look after that.

Comments welcome and cross posted on various Triumph, MG and other BMC forums.

I'm wondering why you mentioned the 'similar' metric sizes?

When you search on ebay etc for say 1 13/16 it sometimes comes up with 13/16. In certain cases no availability of the old imperial AF sockets.

Also there are more metric sockets available than AF these days so more likely to find a metric socket.

Going to the Glamis Transport Extravaganza at the weekend and there are usually second hand tools there.

The MGB 'banjo' axle has the same eight-sided nut as the MGA. Roadsters up to 1967.

Hi

Bill's Tools in Glasgow sells large size secondhand (ex-MOD Britool and other good brands) individual imperial sockets.

If I remember correctly Land rover early Series imperial wheel nuts use the same size socket as the Sprite steering wheel nut (1 1/16 inch AF?)

but if you want AF then you don't want metric. I was taught Similar or 'near enough' is not good enough. There are plenty of secondhand large AF sockets, just need to know where to look, asnd maybe be patient and persevere.
