MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Lever Arm damper 'castle' nut

Hi there,

As per title does anyone know where I can get a 'castle' nut, it is the big one which holds the top arm onto the side of the front lever arm damper body.

It was removed during the overhaul of the dampers and the thread is damaged on the nut and it cannot be re-used.

Alternatively if anyone has an old scrap lever arm lying around they could remove it from I would be very grateful as I currently have a LA which is un-useable and seemingly no new stock is available!

Yours 'hopefully'

Spencer

S Deakin

So, what did you find when you removed the nut??...LOL

sorry, congrats on the attempt and at least trying to see how they are made, This shock may be one of those to cut it open to see how they work and look inside, I ceertianly wouldnt re-use it, no doulbt the lever that the opposing pistons are attached to is damaged, and getting the arm back on axactly on the correct spline is a vagas gambling game...if you just want a castle nut try a good machine shop or advanced hardware store, might try apple hydrolics But to buy a great set of lever shocks that are built for today, and are viturely indistructable and have a history of not leaking, try peter cardwel, out of michigan

Hi Prop,

The LA damper is still fine and assuming I can get a new castle nut I will re-use the damper.

The nut was removed, not with intention of removing the arm from the damper (It is till attached - so no problems with getting it back on in the same place) but as part of tidying the appearance of it up, I have been getting the various nuts / bolts re-plated and it should have been a straight forward exercise except for the damage to the nut.! As you say there is no need to remove the nut for the physical overhaul of the damper itself.

I tried Peter Caldwell and got no reply (Plus with postage, duty etc... they end up pretty expensive) so I am sending them to a place in the UK - who sounded like they knew what they were talking about? We'll see.

Cheers

I've got some scrap LAs - I'll see if I can get the nut off. Alternatively I'm exhibiting at Race Retro at Stoneleigh if you can get there and take a whole damper off me (preferred, it's busy this week...)

Max,

Thanks very much for the offer except I am at Brands this weekend so can't make it to the Retro show.

If you are busy this week its no problem to wait a week or so for you to get the nut off and send it if thats OK?

Cheers

Im sorry deakin,

I didnt look close enough that you are in the uk, you might try peter MAY in the uk and give minisport a try, they may not have on there website, but Im sure if you call, they would have something somewhare on a shelf

I still think you can find a castle nut and a good well devoloped/advanced hardware store or machine shop.

try a front end alignment shop, lots of cars still in use that use castle nuts on wheel bearing hubs, and suspension parts, they would certianly have plenty of spares

Try McMaster Carr

http://www.mcmaster.com/#

They have nearly every bit of hardware imaginable! You can find all the bolts, orings, washers etc here for less than Moss. They even have witworth thread stuff.

Spencer, I don't recall receiving a request. If you need the castle nut, I have a few 100. Let me know. Peter C in WISCONSIN, Prop. ;-)

Based in Selly Oak, Birmingham. He rebuilt my rear SAs and seems to a vast stock of used SAs of all varieties for all sorts of cars.

Cheers for the feedback,

I have emailed Peter Caldwell again

Alan, yes I planning to send them to Stevson, I am in Walsall but drove through Selly Oak everyday in the 80's while I was serving my apprenticeship at "The Rover" (Longbridge) a lifetime ago now!

Create your own castle nut. Get a nut that fits the thread and use a fine blade disc on an angle grinder. Make the cuts and there you go.Should not take more than 5 minutes as accuracy is not paramount.

A second way is to use a hacksaw with two blades mounted side by side.

I was going to recommend Derek @ Stevson Motors, but Alan beat me to it. Derek worked at Longbridge many years ago!
