MG Midget and Sprite Technical - manifold gasket

Hi everyone,
73' 1275, Mk3 midget, just about to take my manifolds off to have a look and cure what I'm hoping is not a cracked exhaust manifold, ahhhh my question.... I have a new gasket, do I put it back on as it is or should I put a gasket compound on there as well, It seems that a PO might have done, by the look of the gunge extuding around the edges.
thanks for any help,
Dave.

a sealant ought not to be needed

one thing to check, though, is that the thickness of the mounting ears is the same, between the two manifolds, any uneven level between them will prevent a proper seal when the nuts are tightened

possibly the sealant was put in there to try and deal with a leak caused by un-matched manifold ear thickness

or, possibly someone used sealant, "just in case", which is fine too, it shouldn't hurt anything as long as it is capable of handling the heat (normal gasket goo will melt at exhaust temperatures)
