MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Maplins intermittent wiper kit

Found this kit:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/k2599-intermittent-wiper-controller-3182

How would this be wired into the loom? It must still allow normal wiper operation wouldn't it. As I have a single speed wiper, I have a spare position on my rocker switch, could this position be used for the intermittent function?

That looks great. I think i'll get one too.

Yes as long as you have a 3 position switch, it will work.

1 Off

2 On normal single speed operation(as wired presently)

3 Intermittent.

It says the pot to control the interval can be run remotely, so looks like a winner. I'm sure you can get these from other suppliers too, but at £7.99 it's got to be a winner.

Unless somebody knows of a cheaper and ready made option for sprites?

I have one fitted and it seems to work as expected, though I try to avoid going out in the rain so testing has been of short duration!

There is also another more expensive gadget called "Smartscreen" which I tried about 10 years ago but just couldn't get it to work properly.

My fault I expect but I gave up on it eventually.

The K2599 from Maplin is easy enough to put together itself but the wiring into the car instructions are awful and I felt like throwing the thing away at one point.

I eventually fitted it to my midget which had a single speed motor and then upgraded to a 2 speed motor, and switch, and I modified the wiring to suit.

I have scanned the diagram I finally worked out was required to fit it into a 2 speed system, if it is of any use to you to help with the wiring.
The single speed diagram is simpler but I no longer have it.

I;ve also seen the Smartscreen, I like the one with auto wash/wipe when you have electric washers. I have them now, but i reckon some electronics whizz could make a circuit that puts power to the wipers for say 3 seconds when the washer button is pressed. That version of smartscreen is £50, a bit dear but wiring is very simple.

I wasn't sure about the wash/wipe Smartscreen because I like to have the electric washers running and wetting the screen well before the wipers move, and I wasn't sure how well the Smartscreen would match that requirement.

In any event I would say the cost is excessive, and I personally was not impressed some years ago.

Perhaps it has been improved since, but I found it a fiddly system to operate but no doubt one would get used to it.
