MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Midget 1500 leaf springs

Hi all!

I'm in need of new leaf springs (broken leaves, well worn etc), but I remember conversations about poor supplies a couple of years back.

Has anyone fitted new springs recently to original spec. and what's the quality like now from the usual suppliers, or is there a good independant out there?

Thanks,

Sean

I think you'll find they've been OK for a few years now, mine were fitted on October 2009 and are still fine on a car that is used

for lowered rear springs see Kim Dear of Magic midget - http://magicmidget.co.uk/

if you're changing the springs you might also think about changing the bushes, I can recommend Super-Flex from my use of them

Replaced my 1500 springs 3 years ago, no problems of good quality. Now I need to lower it, bugger.

Hi again,

Thanks all for the notes above, I took the plunge, and acquired a pair from one of the usual suppliers.

They've since arrived, so I thought some pics might be useful for the archive.

First pic is of my 'original' pair vs the new ones. Not sure just how old the old ones are, but they're clearly different to one another...

The second leaf in the new pair is offset at one end, not sure if this will cause problems. Also the new pair has some form of plastic between the leaves, I presume this will act as a sort of lubricant to reduce squeaking.

The forward bushes were pre-installed, which I guess is also a good thing - saves trying to press new ones in.

Second pic shows the 'sag' for want of a better description between the old and the new.

I suspect the stronger arch on the new is going to make things interesting when trying to get the rear shackle to settle in the right direction...

Thanks again,

S.

there's a John twist video on checking the rear springs
