MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Midget sill lettering

Hi

I've been ploughing away with a 72 midget build since August 2009. I'm at the seam sealing stage and mock up before painting. It has just occurred to me that I was a bit hasty in slinging my old sills, and you guessed it, I don't have the measurements for the lettering positions. A quick search on the net produced the goods and I also read a thread from a guy in the States who decided the stick his letters on with modern car badge double sided tape. Sounds like quite a good idea. Anyone here tried this? Unfortunately he didn't say how he got on.

Hello Si,

I've got an AutoCAD drawing of where the letters go - I printed it 1:1, pasted it onto a sheet of MDF and used that as a drill jig. Make sure you've got a good stock of 3mm drills, I managed to break two doing the job - but then I am a clumsy git! I've also seen them stuck on with trim tape and this seems like a good idea too - obviously you'll have to modify the sill letters themselves to have a flat back.

Let me know your email address and I'll email the drawing over to you if you'd like it.

Have fun
Mark

I like the idea of the backing tape as many years ago I drilled my sills for the letters. To this day one of them was slightly out and I constantly cringe when I notice it!

With that in mind would you mind sending me the AUTOCAD drawing please Mark and if you have no objection I would like to put something on our website to demonstrate it.

I've got stick on letters on the back of mine rather than the sills. they look nice IMO, but ate going to be a right *thingy* to paint round - they're stuck on really well :) they're from halfords and a bit different from the sill letter font :)

Excellent Mark,

Yes please, can you ping it over to simon@rickettsco.com and Rob I quite like the look of those letters. Are they metal or plastic and do you recall how much you paid?

Si,
I've got a template for each side which also aligns to the leading edge of the sill. I was given it years ago by another Midget owner. I've done 2 cars since then, but won't be doing any more. If what you have been sent so far doesn't help you ( I'm sure it will though ),send me your address and I'll post to you.

Thanks Geoff, if I don't hear from Mark in a couple of days I would much appreciate the template. I'll let you know. I'm also going to investigate the stick on letters.

Thanks all

When I restored my Mk111 Midget 20 years ago I bought the Midget words and cut off the lugs at the back. I then superglued the letters to the sill (as I didn't want to drill the metal). These are still on the sills and going strong. Photo was taken this year.

Simon,

here's a template from the archives.
You may want to enlarge it!

Jeremy - I think that's the one I've got. Looks remarkably similar! Si, Bob, you have mail...

Bob, the drawing is not mine originally, but I can't recall where I came by it. Letters look just fine on my sills.

Thanks again all for your help.

Jeremy, out of interest your car is identical spec to mine. Flame red, wires, RWA, 1972?
Got any more pictures?
