MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Mk 111 hood fastening

I've recently aquired a 68 Mk 111(graduating from a 66 Mk 11) and can't get the hood cover press fasteners to "click" onto the rear hood rail. This appears to be because some(stupid person*)has fitted a replacement hood using self-tapping or wood screws right through the plastic edging strip and as the head of the screw is flush with the top of the cup, this is preventing the fastener from closing( see pic)
Could some one please let me know what the correct fastening method should be ? If it's a rivit, do you need a special snipe-nosed riviter, as the nose on my tool is too "blunt" to locate a rivit at the base of the cup.

The principle of how they are fitted is correct - screw through the centre of the tonneau fastener stud / through the alloy strip/hood/ and into the body upstand - screw should not stick out though and best made of stainless steel.

I attached mine with stainless machine screws and nylocs. It required the help of a lovely assistant. Just choose a screw head that will not interfere with the snap.

The midget I acquired had the same problem from the previous 'numpty'. On Page 235 of the current Moss parts book there is a solution. I have only just noticed their remedy but I did the same thing. I shall use Trevor's fix if the screws do not hold, assuming I can find a willing lovely assistant!

I used brass 4ba screws and nuts about 25/30 years ago, and they are still in use. I just fitted another hood in fact and reused the same 4ba screws. I removed the self tappers because they kept coming lose.

You could rivet it on, but then whenever you want/need to remove the hood, you have to drill them out. Hassle. On the other hand the header rail has rivets, so take your pick.

Thanks very much everybody for your your advice - fortunately, I have a charming assistant to hand!

This came up a few years back - 2007, actually, but I can't find it in the archives.

I was having trouble identifying the correct screws to attach the finisher strip.

I managed to remove all of the rusty originals, even the ones that snapped when trying to undo them. MGOC supplied me with self-tappers, which I was not best please about.

This photo shows the self tappers compared to the originals...

We did fianlly identify the correct thread and I found some screws, although they were slotted rather than cross-head, but I can't remember what the thread was.
