MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Mystery Wheel
Please could someone help me identify the wheel in the picture? Its a 6J width and 13" diameter and has the B1360 stamped on it as well as Made in England! I have four of these but one is badly buckled and I would like to get a full good set. Thanks Nigel P ![]() |

Could be a Metro Turbo, or a Rover of some type Cheers John |

Nigel, when you described these to me at Oulton Park, I thought they could be Allycats, but now seeing them, I tend to agree with John & Julie. Mark. |
Mark Boldry |
Mark, they are very similar to Allycat, indeed some of the other guys use Allycats on their Class B cars so they must have a similar offset and PCD. They are not Metro Turbo wheels but again are very similar in design to the later Turbo "BBS" style alloy. The offset is different and the spokes are much deeper set in the rim. BTW, have you found a car to race with us yet? I noticed Peter Dignan's old car has been sold via pistonheads.com? Is it now yours? |
Nigel P |
Nigel. I missed Peter's car, I responded to the ad that weekend but he didnt respond until over a week later, so I guess a sale was in progress. I DO have first refusal if the deal falls flat. I have located two more cars though, both MGOC championship cars so may have some work to do to bring one to Group C spec. Just looking at the MGCC site, I see there are some more for sale... have I missed the boat...? I'll be going to look at one this evening. Mark. |
Mark Boldry |
Group C spec I think you'll need some ground effect tunnels and a bigger engine! |
Jeremy Cogman |
Which site are you looking at? I didn't know the MGCC had a classified section on their site. Did you ever get a look at Dean Stanton's tango orange Class B midget Challenge car that I saw you posted an interest on the Challenge website about? I believe it was quite a nicely prepared car although he seemed to be asking a lot of dosh for it. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for anyone selling. Nige |
Nigel |
Jeremy, Its back to front in the Midget Challenge - Class C is roadgoing and Class A is spaceframes, ground effects and...well...pretty much Will Smallridge class!! But I know what you meant! Nigel |
Nigel |
Midget Challenge Class C (or Group C) is a roadgoing class. NOT a bloody Le Mans spec car... lol Nige. Have a look on Google at Midget Challenge Cornwall Surveying, it should bring you up with the site, but I guess you'll know of it anyway. I did ask Dean to contact me re tha car, but he didn't so I guess it's sold. Mark. |
Mark Boldry |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_C But I think you knew that. |
Jeremy Cogman |
Oh...I see, that Group C!!! Sorry, bit slow on the uptake there |
Nigel |
agree it looks Rover 100 / Metro-ish, try Stewart Flett he often has NOS Rover wheels for sale. |
David Smith |
Didn't the (Rover) Metro GTa have wheels like that? Tim. |

They could be Compomotives, im sure they would help you if you gave them a call. Oh and Deans car isnt that expensive at all, the engine and gearbox in it cost more than the car is to buy, it has a Peter May dogbox in it which is over 2k and the engine has full steel caps and would stand you more than 4k!!!! If you look at any ready built race car its always cheaper than the sum of the parts, my mate wanted to build a B car, but when we started to add it up, even with SH parts and lots of hard work by us we still got way over 10k!!!! Cheers Mark |
Mark Turner |
Thanks, Mark. I'll try Compomotive. I'm sorry if I sounded rude about Dean's car, I meant no offense, just showed my own ignorance. Yes, Racer or Road car, it always costs way more to build one than buy someone elses. Its a shame there aren't more cars around available for people to get straight into racing as I reckon there are a lot of people like me who wanted to go racing but don't have the know how to build a car from scratch. See you at Silverstone! Nigel |

Nigel, are you sure that the bent wheel you have is beyond repair? Take a look at this company's website: http://www.alloywheelrepairs.net/ It appears that they can repair virtually anything from the videos My father in law has 'drug dealer' wheels on his Jag, (20" Sepangs) which can't cope with Somerset roads, and they sorted major pothole damage out for much less than a new wheel, and having seen the rim without the tyre the repair was faultless. |

No offense, I dont think people often know what it takes to build a race engine, it adds up very quickly (and painfully) its several hundred pounds to prep a block let alone the rest!!! See you at Silverstone for a few beers BBQ etc!! |
Mark |
thats an old BMW wheel from the 70's C. bentcliff has those wheels on his car... prop |
Prop |
Wouldn't have thought 70s BMW wheels would have a 4in PCD. Not likely to be made in England, either. |
Andrew Noakes (1275 Midget) |
Thanks everyone. I think I'll try Rob's suggestion of getting it fixed! Nigel P |
Nigel Pratt |
Seems to be the same type wheel as the ones on show here: http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/images/r200400_01.jpg |
Adrian |
it may be a rimmstock see link.. http://www.mini-mayfair.net/felgen.html |

Don't think they are Rover, they don't have the big square bit in the middle. Cheers John |
