MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Need help

Hi Mg people,

I am a owner of a Mg midget 1500 1976 and i have a problem.
When i try to start the engine when cold the rpm needle jumps up and down the engine shakes an rattles and from the moment the engine temp. goes up it starts to run norma, the it drives perfect runs perfect, but when the engine is cold again problem starts over.
What have i changed just put in electronic ignition and cleaned the carburator. the carburator is a stromberg cd 150 vacuum.
Can somebody help me to guid me in the direction where to look.

I'm not too familiar with the Stromberg carburettor, as they weren't fitted to UK spec cars.

Is your car a North American model?

Does it have a manual or auto choke?

Is the carburettor choke working properly when you pull the knob out on the dashboard?

Hi,

Well i know that my mg has exported in 1976 to the US and imported back to holland 2010 and then imported to belgium 2012 and then i became the owner in 2013. so its an american but al the emission stuff was already removed only the charcoal canister is still active.

it is a manual choke
And yes the choke works perfectly.

Jan,
one of the John Twist videos might help as he's USA based and IIRC there are some (at least one) that has info on US emissions and certainly one on charcoal canister (it might be about a B but still might help).

The way the stuff was taken off (rerouted?) may, or may not, contribute to your problem.

There are a couple of hundred vids and what you want could be far back so you'll have to search -

Which electronic have you installed?

If necessary to test could you revert back to CB points if they were in good condition and working well before you changed - this from me that thoroughly dislikes CB points.
