MG Midget and Sprite Technical - new rear springs?
Although it must be around the time to start another parabolic spring thread... I've found a fracture line on one of the leaves after much de-rusting :( time wasted, but no matter. Who is to be recommended for non-sagging springs? |
Will Munns |
the usual suspects IS Peter May but he doesn't seem to keep them in stock for long The telephone is your friend with Peter Do not, really do not, buy from a shop next door to the Morris Minor Centre at Oldbury in the West Midlands if you value your sanity The Moss ones I had before were not a lot of good either |

more to do in the morning! |
Will Munns |
I put FL 1" lowered on last year - they're already S-shaped. |
Dean Smith ('73 RWA) |
my last ones flattened within three weeks then reversed (sagged) in the next fortnight absolutely useless and they are not even curved in a parabola but each length has several "corner marks" as if they were straightened over some guy's knee without using a former or template Absolute $h!te PM for me next time, even if I have to wait for them to come in... Which explains my designing a four link rear end, with built in triangulation and coilovers which could become my after Sp50 "next task" couldn't it.... |
Bill |
I've gone with the concept that, due to the fact that I can't change them till I move house early june, if I don't look at my springs, there's nothing wrong with them. Working so far. Do I need to get them on order from PM ASAP then? |
Rich Amos (1330cc Blaze Red '72) |
funnily enough PM always tells me not to bother but everyone I speak to who has 'em swears by them I will be examining my mate Bill2's springs on Saturday, his have been on for a couple of months now tell you Monday or see me Sattiday and we can both lie down and look |
Bill |
Please don't look at mine. I fear they are embarrassingly bad. |
Rich Amos (1330cc Blaze Red '72) |
PM says - no stock, no where is making them ATM :( says to check back in a month or so Blames China and their consumption of steel (in metric sizes) Says I am probebly better off getting second hand ones for now. Andy Jennings had no stock but has this morning collected a midget in pieces - so he had one pair and now I have one pair... Here's hoping they are cleaned up old stock rather than new stock! |
Will Munns |
I have Peter May springs been fine for last 3 years. Just put new springs on a B and had to have them made due to no supply anywhere. |
Lee Reed |
Iv'e never looked closely at the springs on either of my midgets, they seem to be doing the job. (ignorance is bliss)or what the eye does'nt see etc. However, this thread has made me aware that springs aint what they aughter be. How do you judge if your springs are shot, ride height? Or do OE springs go on for ever? Dave |
Penwithian |
Will, You're kidding me? Really frustrating as mine are in desperate need of replacing and I need lowered springs (and good ones at that). I guess I better wait out the drought. Balls. |
Rich Amos (1330cc Blaze Red '72) |
Rich you may find that PM has lowered ones but is in a "nocando" about standard ones well worth a phone call Dave, even OE springs get tired, which was why mine got pulled in the first place. I saw that my wheels disapppeared at the top of the wheel arch and it was damned hard to get the wheel off at puncture time, due to sagginess and the drum being very close to the inner wing. Having the propshaft going shiny due to "two men and two rucksacks in normandy last year" didnt help either ![]() |
Bill |
he didn't offer me any lowered springs - so I think you will still be ou of luck :( |
Will Munns |
You might want to try a 1500 spec spring that has an extra leaf; at least here in the US |
J Bubela |
I used some second hand but good 1500 springs last year cut down to near 1275 length leaves. They're ok so far and better than any aftermarket replacements I've ever had which were all S shaped within months. Might be worth a try. |
PaulMkIMkIV |
I bought a pair from The winners Circle two years ago and already they are just as bad as the 30 year old springs they replaced. I have heard that you can get them recurved and that recurving the originals is beter than buying new ones. |

Will I spoke to Kim at Magic Midget recently (01225 704257) and he is having a batch of top quality springs made up soon, probably not cheap but should last. It might be worth speaking to him at Gaydon on Saturday. Ian |
Ian Webb '73 GAN5 |
I suspect British Spring are no longer manufacturing leaf springs for things like MG's and Land Rovers, although I may be wrong. They certainly arn't making their L-R parabolics at the moment. |
Clive Berry |
Andy has come good again! the springs have arrived in less than a day and they look smart. they even have most of the plastic interleaves remaining! |
