MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Noisy Panhard Rod

From reading the archives, I haven't adjusted my newly installed Panhard rod properly!

How should this be done, it's a Peter May install and (as ever!) it's lovely quality, but with poor installation instructions.

Thanks

Took delivery of same article this week with limited instuctions (a) to site the anchorage frame and (b) to attach to Frog axle with rod set level. Are these the same as yours? Did you have a problem? Fitting it on Saturday.

I think you want it just somewhat loose but not sloppy, nor gut hard tightened. just a bit "flexable" thats how I got mine set.

works perfectly...love it

Normally install so bar (rod) not loaded when car on level.

Fitting is quite straight forward, it's just that it crashes and bashes whenever the right hand wheel hits a pothole/ridge!
The right hand wheel is the one with the rod attachment.

On reading the archives, I get the impression that the rod doesn't add to the general noise level! Mine has, so much so, even the girl friend noticed the noise.

Just wondering if there is a trick to setting it up, at the moment it's set much as Prop says.

Loaded? How do you mean?

Andy,

If new and it crashes and bashes that sounds to me as though something is not done up tight and the mounts/components are moving or something is fouling. Regarding loaded, I presume the Panhard rod has left and right handed threaded rose joints to allow adjustment of the length of the Panhard rod, the length wants to be set so that with the car at rest in the normally loaded condition (1 driver?) the Panhard rod is adjusted to a length that is not pulling or pushing the axle to one side or the other.

And the rod should be as level as possible with the weight of the car on the wheels on a level surface. That way it keeps the motion relatively centered.

Just a thought

check nuts and bolts holding the shocks, leafspring U-bolts, ect. ect.

I had a poping and banging 3 or so years ago, and Gryf suggested that, and I was amazed how loose everything was in those types of areas now
I do mine every 6 months and there is always something that has worked loose a small amount...

certianly worth a look, the panhard might be aggagertating the sound if something is loose, after all it does encompase alot of various forces.

aggagertating ....aka a prop-ism, to make the sound more appearent,,,,LOL

Sorry guys, I have now idea where those letters came from or what I was trying to spell, not sure if thats even a word, but it is now....LOL

OK, back up on the stands it goes. And Prop, I understood you!

Given the fact that the axle isn't central to the car, how can I tell if it's (the rod) pulling to one side?

I've set it so the tyres (165/70) don't rub on either side, it's lowered and I can't see any way of making the rod more level without remaking the bracket......

Thanks

disconect the rod
drive around the block and messure rim to arch

Fit the rod and tighten up and check if the messurements are the same

most midget back axles are off center to the car

mine is centered!
But i had to meet a concrete curb to get it like that.....

The easier way than measuring is to simply see if the eye lines up before you put the bolt into place
Will Munns

actually you have to put it on a level concrete floor and carwal under from the rear, you want to look at it from the bar from 2 angles

1st. like your looking down on top, it should run parrallel to the rear axle, not 3 inches on the rightside towards the bach and 5 inches on the opisite side

2nd you want to look at it from the rear it should be parreal to the level ground not higher at one end and lower to the other

once this is done...adjust the bar on the right/left hiem joints so there is maybe 1/4 to 3/8th inch of play, where you can just barly shake it, lock down your hiem joints with the lock nut....from there its just driving it around various corners and deciding to stiffen it or relax it even more

On my panhard rod I had to make another anhcor attathment, the panhard was designed for a lowered race car, and the deminsions where way off so my bar was high on one end and pulled to the front on the other side
Prop

Prop,
I was not aware that there were any level concrete floors in Missouri... does your local code enforcement department know about it?

unfortantly All I can find is a pic of the braket I had to make

how does your panhard work???

Mine is attached to the right side axle leaf spring, comes behind the axle, attaches to a bracket on the left side of the car that is in the shape of an upside down "L" then that braket is attatched to screw holes between the gas tank and the foor section of the rear boot

the photo is looking at the right side of car looking back toward the rear of the car...if you look in the upper right hand side corner of the photo you can see a piece of the upper section of the bracket. you can see how the rod sets asciew attached to the bracket attached to the leaf spring, tat should give some idea how thight I have it tightened down
