MG Midget and Sprite Technical - o/s sill removal.

Hi All,
O/s sill on my Mk III midget is going a bit bubbly...can I ask what is the LEAST destructive way of getting the old sill off? - or is it just a butcher it off with a chisel & a FGH?
Thanks

Grinder, and drill out the spot welds. Be prepared to see rust on the inner too. A bit of bubble may just be the paint. Have you got holes?

Hi Lawrence,
No holes, but its def the " metal" under the paint, and I would sooner do it and get decent metal in there. Is the outer sill structural or can I remove it without bracing the car door?

To do it properly, you have to take the A post cover off. The outer and the inner together are a box. Taking the outer of will lessen the rigidity, but shouldn't affect the door gap. But it would be better to brace the gap to be certain.

when were they last done, do you know?

Why not remove all the paint first, and see how deep the 'rust' is?
Lawrence Slater

Definitely brace the door aperture. I've known the aperture close up a bit even with a brace.

3X bracing the door..

I havent done the sills, thank god! But having done other rust repair, your miles ahead to pull the door off and brace the opening, if it wasnt needed, then hey ho, but if you did need the bracing, your will break your arm patting yourself on the back for being so smart

Prop

Prop and the Blackhole Midget

Why not just take the paint off and see if you can do some local repairs for now? It's a bit to do if you want to repair it properly with wings off, A pillar cover off, door braced etc etc.
Then there's the issue of what you find looking inside. These things are always tip of the iceberg. How far do you really want to go?
Roadwarrior

Just what I've been saying Roadwarrior.

If it's only one contained section on the face of sill, cut that section out and weld in new metal. By making a hole, you'll get a look inside anyway, and can then decide what to do next.

Show us a picture of the section with all the paint removed.

Hi All,
Many thanks for the tips.
Will have a think!
