MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Pics & measurements needed - early Midget boot
I've got a new boot lid and I will be putting on the early style emblems along with a nice chrome rack. I need some pictures so I can see where the stuff goes. If you can also give me measurements like from the bottom or top edge of the lid to the top / bottom of the emblems that would be great. Here's the little gem I received from Moss yesterday:
Rick Bastedo
Thats nice rick, Do you have any idea what type of rack you have.....there are several differant ones....you may just have to lay it on top and play with it till you find what you like, thats what I did.... If you can Id get the factory rack,,, it looks really cool...you will want the 4 slat rack ...the 5 slat goes on the mgb for me it was a bit tricky as it went thur the frame of the lid....I also used stainless steal hardware so as not to get any rust. prop
Prop
Thanks Prop, Yes it's the 4 slat - the lid is already drilled for it. I'll make sure the hardware is all stainless, no need to invite more rust! Now if I just had a picture of where the emblems go...
Rick Bastedo
I wish I could help you on the emblems Rick, But after fitting the rack, I liked the simplistiy so much, I choose not to add anything extra.... prop
Prop
rack!?~! sorry if you promise to forget about the rack i will messure the rest
o Könemann
Thanks - ok, I forget about the rack - ok?
Rick Bastedo
ok from the top edge of the boot handle it's 8,5cm up to the bottom of the midget letters. And from the top of the letters it's 2,5 cm to the bottom of the octagonal mg logo now no boot rack ok?
o Könemann
Thanks, I really appreciate those numbers... hmmm... no rack?... I'd have to fill a lot of holes, the lid came predrilled for the rack... I'll have to look at it again & see if I actually like it or not. If not I suppose I could ebay the thing to pay for more parts!
Rick Bastedo
I personally like the rack myself, as long as its a factory orginal....I never liked those tubular ones from moss or brit vic.....to cheap looking to me...but the rack is nice to bunggie cord a duffle bag to..... I have been looking around for a real antique picnic basket with a setting for 4, but I keep getting out bid on ebay for them....not real wild about the new ones...kind of chessy looking to me and not any cheaper then the the orginal antique ones......the one I cried over and contemplated sucide for, was for a mercedies, it was belived to be made by the factory, as an add -on option back in the 1930's, absolutly cherry...it was lost in the last 8 sec. by $3.00...lol still boo hoo-ing prop

these car's were made for driving!
o Könemann
>>>>>>these car's were made for driving! <<<<<<<<< And BBQ on the exhauste manifold while driving'''''MMM ....chicken enchuladas, scholoped pataos, and asperagrus in chicken grave.....and a nice local ice cold fruity cherry wine...or champaighn. yummie prop
Prop
Prop, do you have to use the heavy duty tin foil to wrap all that up for cooking under the bonnet? Just asking, I've never tried it myself but it sounds kinda fun. What's the cooking time for a mess like that? I just wouldn't want to get cheese or other goo on the motor...
Rick Bastedo
o, I agree, therefore I have a boot rack on my Midget and on my Bugeye. Not having the rack would severely limit my driving. I had two luggage bags strapped to the rack on my Bugeye for the 3200 mile trip home. Would not have been easy to get the car home otherwise. My cars are not merely for little day-trips or autocrosses, they have to be able to handle real trips as well. David "not a daytripper" Lieb
David Lieb
David & Prop - Would you do me a favor & post a picture or two of your racks? It would be nice to see them installed. Thanks!
Rick Bastedo
hey rick, Ill see what I can do....as to the BBQ...I have never done it with the midget....only once with my truck years ago when I had a girl friend...it was romantic...but I used a cooking bag 1st (like what you put a turkey into and tied it off then used the heavy duty foil, shiny to the inside, it cooks fast about 20-30 minutes...there is a exhauste manifold cook book by 2 new jersy brothers that are radio show auto machanics...cant remember there names but they are real funny....but the cook book is on manifold cooking for an MG TD.....you can probable google it or amazon might have it. about 3-5 years ago prop

I got 2 Photos of my rack...
Prop
and for the hollidays there is the simple alternative of a removable rack! (not for bugs oke) and the rest of the year the lines won't be spoiled
o Könemann
sorry,,,, try this agian....
Prop
and the 2nd photo.....

love that car Prop
Bill
thanks bill, I sure love her, this is the 1st full year i have had an oppertunity to really drive her. prop
Prop
Prop, Nice car. I was looking at the 2nd photo. Where is your bonnet latch? Allan
ADJ Jacks
He uses a very high tech device called a golf club. Musta found it in a field ;-)
Martin
Thanks very much Prop - I too love the looks of your car! The Car Guys? Tom & Ray? I have listened to them on the radio for as long as I can remember. They are on Public Radio if that's the right guys. One of them owns a TD - so I think it must be. They were recently on a Future Cars show, they drove a Tesla and were impressed. (so was I) Your rack looks good on there, and I like the paint color too. Is the chrome strip on your bonnet available from anywhere? I might like to put one of them on my new bonnet.
Rick Bastedo
Rick, The chrome strip is item one at http://www.mossmotors.com/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=29318 Your's didn't come with it. You'd also need to get the mounting hardware and drill holes in the bonnet.
Martin
Wow - $215 for a chrome strip - Wow!! I'm not "that" in love with the look - just thought it might be nice.
Rick Bastedo
Hey rick, WOW $215...... Ill sell you my strip for an even $200...Whew, I didnt know moss started carrying those agian.....I watched Ebay for 6 months to get that strip, and ended up paying around $80 for it, But I do love it...its not meant for my car as well nor is the grill....but I love the look.....I do use a golg club for the bonnent stick....its a ping kst 7 iron perfect size, and extremely stable unlike the orginal stick, with the little unpridictable flicker release, and it gets alot of comments prop
Prop
oh and the color is ....1998 GM fairway green metalic....base coat, clear coat.....it has 4 differant colors of metal flake and 3 colors of pearl it glows in the sun prop

I've got the book. It is titled: Manifold Destiny. It was written by Chris Maynard and Bill Scheller. The ISBN number is 0-679-72337-4. It was published in 1989 by Villard Books. They concluded that the very best road range is an inline six Jag. About this they said, "The best setup we have ever come across for easy-access, top-of-the-engine cooking was the upper surface of the in-line six in a 1965 Jaguar XK-E. If you can think of no other reason to own an E-type Jag - in which case your soul is as dead as a road-kill armadillo - consider that long, uncluttered block, the top of which is formed into a deep V by the slanted valve covers on either side. The plugs come in right at the top, but they hardly interfere. This is the place for roasting elongated items like pork tenderloin or eye of the round." I do recall Tom & Ray talking about the book on their show, but if they wrote something similar to it, I am not aware of it. It just sounds like something they would have written. Charley
C R Huff
Aha! Have I mentioned I'm the database guy for a large public library system? Manifold destiny : the one! the only! guide to cooking on your car engine! Maynard, Chris, New York : Villard Books, 1998. 151 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. Call number: 641.58 MAY 1998 It's now on its way to my desk. Yes, it does sound like something Tom & Ray (the car guys) would have written. I believe I remember them talking about it. Thanks Charley!
Rick Bastedo
Rick, That's great. Now you can whip up some dinner on your way home from work. And then, "... you'll find out what "cooking with gas" really means." Charley
C R Huff
Heh - just reading on the Car Guys website about Tom's 52 MG TD. Some pretty funny stuff. http://www.cartalk.com/content/features/MGTD/ Enjoy!
Rick Bastedo
Aha! Found their page with the videos of them cooking on the engine of the MG TD: http://www.cartalk.com/content/features/simplyming/clips.html Enjoy!
Rick Bastedo
Just went to Amazon. Manifold Destiny is currently out of print, but there is a new edition coming that you can pre-order. David "time to get an Amazon order going" Lieb
David Lieb
David, Yup, I guess with the high price of fuel the book may make a comeback so your gas can do double duty. Charley
C R Huff
The video that rick presented is exactly what I was talking about....if you find the intiere program they will tell you the name of the NEW book Its not Manifold Destiny, although that is a great book and is avialable from amazon for around $50 used...its a classic and vary funny but the tom and ray guys in the video have a new cookbook about manifold cooking....but I have no idea as to the name of the book...but 98.7367 % sure its not Manifold Destiny prop
