MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Propshaft Greasing
I am having difficulty greasing my propshaft (exchange from Moss) the guns that i have (Wanner - very high pressure and a small unit that you have to hold on - not clip onto nipple) both cannot get into the restricted space between the yokes. Tried turning prop around etc. Is it a case of incorrect length nipples supplied - I've just rebuilt my spare shaft and same problem. Can't remember this problem on old my midget i had in the seventies. I don't like sealed for life as they can only contain the same quantity of grease, as they also have to be assembled into the yokes. I seem to remember years ago when i helped out a friend in his garage he had a gun with a needle or 'V' point that went into the centre of the nipple - are these available ? Richard.

I had exactly the same problem when I renewed the UJ's on the Frog. In the end I simply reduced the diameter of the nipple connector with a hand file and it went on a treat. So check the wall thickness and I imagine you could do the same.

You can also buy a long grease fitting, install it long enough to grease the joint, then put the short one back in. Yes, it is a pain, but not as bad as replacing the u-joint... David "many of the couplers on the greaseguns are interchangeable, too. Keep looking for one that will fit in there and work with your gun." Lieb

I use a replacement flexible pipe on my Wanner because of this problem (mine was accessing nipples on some of my front suspension but the prop nipples are just as big a bugbear) the ends can be carefully "tapered" to give easier access, too The replacement came from the tool department at Halfords and is packaged as Draper, direct unscrew/screw neww one in. It took three minutes or less. And it clips nicely onto the nipple ends from most directions

Richard, are you referring to the Sellarc greaser? Mark. ![]()

This problem arose when trying to grease the nipples on a Morris Minor Centre propshaft supplied for a Sprite 'type 9' conversion. The broad head of a Wanner grease gun would not enter the Vee of the prop joint to seal around the grease nipple. I had some extended grease nipples that are, perhaps 1/2 long. I had to recut the threads to, I believe, 6.00 mm to be able to screw into the U/J. After fitting and application of grease to the U/J I have, to date, experienced no problems.

Mark, That looks like it - think it had 'Castrol' badges but probably the same unit. Looks a bit large for my restricted garage !! Wish i had more space! Have been looking on the 'net' and some 'pointed' ends are available to thread onto an extension that may just get in there between the yokes - has anyone tried these - seem to be threaded standard BSP. The pointed bit displaces the B/B in the nipple and allows the grease past etc. Richard.
