MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Protecting cast iron parts

Hi I am going to be fitting a new dual master cylinder and wondering whether to paint it or possibly lacquer it to stop it becoming a rusty mess like the old one . Any ideas , what have you done ?

I sprayed mine with petrol resistant clear lacquer. Still looks good after 10 years

I gave mine a coat of phosphoric based rust converter which turned it a soft black. Then a coat of clear laquer
