MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Question for Guy re - 5 speed tail housing

Guy
Ages ago you posted some pictures of your shortened Type 9 tail housing. Is it possible to see them again, plus do you have a picture of gear stick in the car, without the gaiter.
Thanks very much.

Hi Les,
I am not currently signed up to a web site for posting photos, so will just attach a couple here.

And the gearstick. Shortened because it just consists of the straightened out sierra gearlever below the rubber anti-vibration bush. In practice, in the car it is very short with the gear knob nestled down against the top of the gaiter. It works fine, but I keep thinking I should weld an extra bit onto the lever to raise it, but perhaps just by an inch or so, that's all.might

Brilliant, thanks.
Does your gear lever sit in the middle of the hole in the tunnel or offset forwards / backwards.

Les,
shortening the extension was so that the gearlever would come out of the normal tranny tunnel hole. I didn't want it back near the handbrake. The gearstick is ok, but the boss that it bolts to on the extension is quite high. In order not to have to have the rear of the gearbox too low
I did need to do some slight modification.
I took off the "squoval" strengthening edge of the hole by drilling out the welds, moved it rearwards about an inch or so and rewelded it. If I had lowered the rear of the gearbox a bit more it wouldn't have been necessary

The amount you can take out of the extension is limited by the position of an oil seal on the gear selector link arm, so this is the best I could manage.

Les,

One thing that has been mentioned before to be careful of with this mod is not to overheat the bush in the extension housing that supports the propshaft yoke. It's likely tin/lead and doesn't take a lot of heat to melt.
David Billington

The 'tin' bush mentioned is available for about £8. Removal / replacement is not difficult. Mine was cooked in the welding process whilst doing such a remote conversion.
