MG Midget and Sprite Technical - quick starter motor question

I need to replace the starter motor on my 1972 1275 midget. I can get hold of a starter for a 1500. Are they interchangable?

thanks

No , I don't think so. I think they are different sizes, different position and different Bendix gear.

Moss catalogues and my old Spridgebits catalogue state the starter is for ALL models

LeaceyMG say the same

And of course I may be wrong. It has been known to happen!

I believed that being on the other side of the engine, the starter would also spin the wrong way but thinking about it, it doesn't!

Sorry! I am now leaving for a drive in the Sprite to clear my muddled brain!

Thanks for the fast replys guys.

Bill I found the same information as you which indicates that they are inter-changable. Wanted to get a second opion, as Guy points out there are some differnces.
Rob Storer

the label on the box for my latest starter indicated that it was for the 1500 which was why I asked LeaceyMG about it

fitted perfectly and works a treat

not sure about the Bendix but the motors are the same. On the 1500 there is a (separate) spacer ring and shim to position the motor correctly.

The differences in Bendixes was at one time they had nine teeth and nowadays they all seem to come with ten teeth

It doesnt seem to give problems in operation

Yes I agree with Dave that the 1500 simply has an extra alloy adapter plate.
On top of that I think on the majority of starter motors the front cover can easily be switched to modify most to fit most applications.

The front CAN be swapped but first you need to pop off the bendix to pull the faceplate off

I have access to the proper tool to compress the bendix spring and release the circlip

nasty job without it

Whats wrong with the original....These thangs tend to last forever....have you tried to clean it....they hate oil, so remember to install it dry...oil and grease free or it will give you fits in the near time
