MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Radio Console

Hi Guys

Does anyone know where I can get a radio console for my midget?

Moss and MGOC show them but they appear to be unavailable.

Any help would be great

I believe they were standard fit on late 1500 Midgets.

You need to find someone breaking one.

Agreed. You used to be able to get glassfibre repros, but I went with a spare I found at a restoration shop.

I've just taken the radio out of my 1500. You are more than welcome to it if you'd like it.

If it works of course - I have no idea whether it does or not!

If you buy one from a breaker make sure it works first. I will be replacing mine at somepoint cos the reciever doesn't work... but its not a high priority atm. Gotta get the gearbox out first!

Thanks for the ebay links I had not thought of that! I am now bidding on one of them so fingers crossed!

Ally, if the radio is available I wouldn't mind giving it a try. What make and model is it?

Well I did not win the auction :(

I see that there is a console for sale through the owners club. It is a fibreglass one though? how strong would a console made out of fibreglass be?

Rylan
R Williams

Not sure Ryan - I'll have a look and let you know
Ally

Rylan I have used consoles made of ABS in the past

The one in my car now was made of plywood one Saturday afternoon

Fibbreglass ones would seem to be very suitable, I have fibreglass wings that I can sit on and a frequent flyer bonnet* that still does the job even if a little the worse for wear

*dont ask...

Thanks Ally, much appreciated!

I did have a chat with MGOC about their consoles.

They can sell me a metal one made to original specifications but it cost £95!

The fibreglass one is around £22 but does not have the armatures cut out, could anyone provide dimensions so I could do it myself? Failing that I may bide my time on eBay :)

Bill, how do you find the fibreglass wings as some reports I have read is that the end result with paint is not as good as metal wings?

Ryan - got home in the dark again, and have no light in the garage. All the bits I have taken off the car are at the back behind the Midget, so will have to dig out a torch, or try and remember to look in the morning if I'm not too late for work!!

From what I can remember - the console was a sort of folding affair. I could be wrong though - took so many bits out that I can't exactly remember what was what!!

I detect the inevitable thread drift, seems to be my fault this time :)

The essential thing with any plastic (fi-glass) parts is to get them smooth before you treat them to primer coats and paints

I smoothed mine and filled them with Holts Metallic Filler and smoothed them again until there were now visible ripples before paint was applied

(Always use Metallic filler, it never swells up with absorbed water which is a total giveaway for any filled areas on a car)

I am very happy with them and there have been some observers who needed convincing that they were not steel.

Anyway, not perfect but servicable suits me...

Rylan,
I have 3 or 4 consoles from different years. No Radios. I can't tell you how good the coverings are right now. They are in the shed. If you are interested, I can ship after Christmas. 1961midger at gmail dot com

I have sent you an email, I am guessing it was 1961midget at gmail dot com instead of 1961midger at gmail dot com!

Ally, how would a folding affair work in terms of staying together? any ideas?

Rylan
R Williams

Screws - iirc.

Just spotted this btw - fibreglass consoles for the Midget £28 http://www.honeybournemouldings.co.uk/mg.htm
Ally
