MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Radio Wiring for 69 Midget

I am putting a new radio in my 69 midget. I need to understand what I wire the red, ignition and yellow, battery wires to and I don't ... any help (pictures worth a thousand words for me) is greatly appreciated.

Thanx,
Audrey

Hi
there should be a wiring diagram in your shop manual! ":o)
here's a link to it. 1969 is on page 252:

But because I was just looking at it, I'll call them out for you:

the colored wires you referred to must be the ones from the back of your new radio. The colors of the matching wires in your car will be different. So, don't worry about the color, focus on matching the purpose:

For the +12V feed (this is the one that is never interrupted so your station presets are not lost), use either one of these:

Brown = unswitched, +12V (this is where a '69 would have the radio powered from, the same wire that would feed the optional cigar lighter). This is also terminal 1 on your fuse block.

Alternatively, you could tap into the purple wire that feeds the horns, because this is fused for 17A (plenty for both the horns and your radio). This is terminal 2 on your fuse block.

For the switched 12V (this is what turns your radio off with the ignition key), tap into the 4th terminal on your fuse block. This is the green wire that is used to power anything that is only on when the ignition is on, like the brake lights, reversing lights, heater fan, and so on.

For the ground, your car uses the color black. Or you can make your own grounding point anywhere there is metal to screw into.

I hope that this helps!

Hi Norm and thanx for the info - I do have wiring diagrams but your explanation certainly explains it clearer.
In the mean time and in my inpatience I just put the red and yellow from the radio to the pos on the battery, hooked up the ground and speaker wires and all is well. But I really do want to do it the right way. Thanx again for the input.
